{"id":80221,"date":"2015-08-19T03:00:12","date_gmt":"2015-08-19T01:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=80221"},"modified":"2015-08-19T03:00:55","modified_gmt":"2015-08-19T01:00:55","slug":"intel-unveils-optane-ssds-7-times-the-performance-of-traditional-ssds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/80221-intel-unveils-optane-ssds-7-times-the-performance-of-traditional-ssds","title":{"rendered":"Intel unveils Optane SSDs: 7 times the performance of traditional SSDs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SSDs, fast as they may be, are still much of a muchness \u2013 based on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flash_memory#NAND_flash\" target=\"_blank\">NAND Flash<\/a> technology and sporting a number of technical disadvantages.<\/p>\n<p>Chiefly among those are shorter life spans than mechanical hard drives, owing to the limited number of times flash memory can go through program-erase cycles, and a lot of required background processing and optimisation that needs doing every time a deletion call is made.<\/p>\n<p>The finite write\/rewrite nature of flash memory, as well as the fact that entire blocks need to be erased, rather than individual bits, meaning a lot of time is wasted moving around files that need to be kept to other blocks, really hampers SSD progress.<\/p>\n<p>3D stacking and an evolution of the technology has allowed for larger and larger, and generally more reliable SSDs, take <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/79871-samsungs-v-nand-process-means-4tb-ssds-for-the-home-pc.html\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung&#8217;s V-NAND process as an example<\/a>. But there&#8217;s only so far you can take the technology.<\/p>\n<p>Intel, in partnership with Micron, knew that all too well and has developed 3D Xpoint Memory as a result.<\/p>\n<p>And the Optane drives they power should blow us away.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/3D-Xpoint-Memory-at-Optane-Technology-Unveiling.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-80225\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/3D-Xpoint-Memory-at-Optane-Technology-Unveiling.jpg\" alt=\"3D Xpoint Memory at Optane Technology Unveiling\" width=\"600\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Announced last month, <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/79199-meet-3d-xpoint-memory-its-1000x-faster-than-conventional-ssd-memory.html\" target=\"_blank\">3D Xpoint Memory<\/a> offers some very serious advantages over NAND Flash.<\/p>\n<p>1000x the endurance and speed, and 10x the density is nothing to scoff at, but it gets better.<\/p>\n<p>Owing to the multiple uses of 3D Xpoint, Intel has announced that along with all new SSDs, they&#8217;re working on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DIMM\" target=\"_blank\">DIMMs<\/a> as well, so we may very well see 3D Xpoint-powered RAM in the future.<\/p>\n<p>For the moment, however, we&#8217;re interested in the SSDs \u2013 for now, the RAM isn&#8217;t all that viable for home PCs. Fast as 3D Xpoint is, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dynamic_random-access_memory\" target=\"_blank\">DRAM<\/a> is a heck of a lot faster.<\/p>\n<p>We also care about their new SSDs because Optane SSDs, Optane being the name given to components powered by 3D Xpoint, creams traditional SSDs.<\/p>\n<p>These are the facts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Optane SSD was able to achieve <strong>7.2x times more IOPS at low queue depth and upto 5.21 times the IOPs of conventional SSDs at high queue depths<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>An Optane Technology based SSD has <strong>10x times the density<\/strong> of conventional SSD drives.<\/li>\n<li>The marketing material also claims it is <strong>1000x faster<\/strong> than the competition available on the market but it isn\u2019t clear to what exactly they are referring to \u2013 a good guess would be latency, as opposed to bandwidth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optane SSDs will have 1000x the endurance<\/strong> \u2013 which, if true, should mean the device has virtually unlimited life span for practical purposes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thanks <a href=\"http:\/\/wccftech.com\/intel-optane-technology-3d-xpoint-ssd-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">WCCF Tech<\/a>. Impressed?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/3D-Xpoint-Optane-Technology-vs.-NAND-Flash-Memory.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-80227\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/3D-Xpoint-Optane-Technology-vs.-NAND-Flash-Memory.jpg\" alt=\"3D Xpoint (Optane) Technology vs. NAND Flash Memory\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Like WCCF Tech noted, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IOPS\" target=\"_blank\">IOPs<\/a> refers to the performance of the SSDs internal components, but not how capable those components are at transferring data from one to another.<\/p>\n<p>Still, that means a noticeably faster SSD with far less latency and all without the loss of durability \u2013 it should translate into longer life spans in fact.<\/p>\n<p>And if the density of Optane drives is anything like Intel suggests, then expect much larger capacities to be developed on a quicker timeframe.<\/p>\n<p>It could very well mean the end of traditional SSDs as we know it.
