We\u2019ve said this a number of times already<\/a>, but we\u2019ll say it again, the Intel Core i7-6700K is a beast of a CPU.<\/p>\n

Not only is it faster than its predecessor, the i7-4790K, as well as the much pricier i7-580K at stock clocks, but it\u2019s one heck of an overclocker.<\/p>\n

Having already reached 5.2 GHz with air cooling<\/a> and 6.5 GHz with liquid nitrogen<\/a>, Chi-Kui Lam, a professional overclocker, has reached 7 GHz (or just under) with liquid nitrogen.<\/p>\n

Intel Core i7-6700K ‘Skylake’ 6998.88 MHz – CPUz.<\/p><\/div>\n

6998.88 MHz is a massive 74.97% improvement over the i7-6700K\u2019s 4 GHz stock clock, and no small feat to achieve.<\/p>\n

In fact, it took 1.888 volts, an additional 0.688 V, and disabling Hyper-Threading as well as all but one of the cores to make it happen.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s a severely gimped processor by all accounts, but there\u2019s no denying how impressive Lam\u2019s achievement is.<\/p>\n

To make it happen, he used an AsRock Z170 OC Formula motherboard, G.Skill\u2019s Ripjaws 4 DDR4 memory and a 1300W PSU. Curiously, Lam chose not to use G.Skill\u2019s Ripjaws 5 or Trident Z DDR4 memory<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Either way, he\u2019s broken the record for the i7-6700K, but he\u2019ll forgive us if we express our desire for someone to break that record and break the 7 GHz barrier.<\/p>\n
