{"id":80323,"date":"2015-08-20T16:30:16","date_gmt":"2015-08-20T14:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=80323"},"modified":"2015-08-21T11:05:22","modified_gmt":"2015-08-21T09:05:22","slug":"4gb-ram-still-sufficient-for-gaming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/80323-4gb-ram-still-sufficient-for-gaming","title":{"rendered":"4GB RAM still sufficient for gaming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Is 8GB of RAM really needed to run all of your favourite PC games?<\/p>\n<p>Well, recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techspot.com\/article\/1043-8gb-vs-16gb-ram\/page3.html\" target=\"_blank\">testing by TechSpot<\/a>\u00a0shows that dropping down to 4GB\u00a0RAM\u00a0has very little impact on gaming performance.<\/p>\n<p>TechSpot ran tests using\u00a04GB, 8GB and 16GB RAM to see which was the best investment.\u00a0The rig used for testing purposes was made up of the following components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Intel Core i7-6700K (4.0GHz &#8211; 4.2GHz)<\/li>\n<li>Asrock Z170 Gaming K6+<\/li>\n<li>Dual-Channel: <strong>16GB DDR4-2666 RAM<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Dual-Channel: <strong>8GB DDR4-2666 RAM<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Single-Channel: <strong>4GB DDR4-2666 RAM<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>GeForce GTX 980<\/li>\n<li>Crucial MX200 1TB<\/li>\n<li>SilverStone Essential Gold 750w<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 Pro 64-bit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They tested out the effects of everyday desktop work and RAM usage for 4GB maxed out at 70%. TechSpot further said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Once you have enough memory for all your applications to run, having more memory won\u2019t increase performance any further.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So to make use of\u00a04GB RAM, your computing habits must not exceed the above threshold or be exceedingly heavy duty for the testing to be applicable.<\/p>\n<p>There are heavily demanding games out there which may require 8GB RAM and it will still remain the recommendation for building a game rig.<\/p>\n<p>But the results from TechSpot&#8217;s testing reveal some interesting surprises when it came to gaming performance.<\/p>\n<p>They tested out a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techspot.com\/article\/1043-8gb-vs-16gb-ram\/page3.html\" target=\"_blank\">bunch of games<\/a>\u00a0with 65 tabs open in \u00a0Google Chrome and found that they used 9 to 10GB RAM out of 16GB RAM.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_80329\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Gaming_01-e1440076593601.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80329\" class=\"wp-image-80329\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Gaming_01-e1440076593601.png\" alt=\"GTA 5 benchmarks\" width=\"600\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-80329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Very surprising results! Image courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techspot.com\/article\/1043-8gb-vs-16gb-ram\/page3.html\" target=\"_blank\">TechSpot<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>TechSpot did carry out some other tests\u00a0that\u00a0showed off increased speed with 8GB and 16GB of RAM, like compressing files with 7-Zip and various other tasks.<\/p>\n<p>However, with gaming large amounts of RAM are not really needed it seems, as you can even get away with 4GB RAM in your rig.<\/p>\n<p>The catch is that you can&#8217;t be running anything heavy duty in the background while playing a game.
