This comes by way of an official announcement<\/a> over on Mortal Kombat X’s<\/em> Warner Bros. community page<\/a>; Mortal Kombat X<\/em> for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 has been cancelled.<\/p>\n

Not a lot was said regarding the game’s cancellation for the older platforms, but then again, not a lot needs saying:<\/p>\n

After months of development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has come to the regrettable conclusion that we cannot release Mortal Kombat X<\/em> for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Please know our teams worked diligently to meet the quality standards set by the current-gen versions of the game. We were not able to get the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to the quality expected of a Mortal Kombat<\/em> game and are very sorry for not being able to deliver the products as originally planned.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When we initially saw Mortal Kombat X<\/em>, we were pretty sceptical at whether or not NetherRealm Studios would be able to make it work for the older consoles.<\/p>\n

There was just too much going on, too many graphical effects and more variables than the meagre 512mb of RAM available to either console (though in differing forms) to handle.<\/p>\n

Optimisation only gets you so far before you’re removing a heck of a lot just to make it work, and we can’t blame Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studios for staying their hand and calling it quits.<\/p>\n

On the plus side, anyone who pre-ordered the game for either console is entitled to a full refund.<\/p>\n
