Speaking to CNN<\/a>, Microsoft Game Studios president Phil Spencer called 3D home entertainment “more like a science experiment than something that’s going to go touch millions of people.” He was specifically referring to the 3D version of Batman: Arkham Asylum.<\/p>\n

“As an entertainment company, we’re trying to do things that millions of people can go enjoy today,” said Spencer. “And for better or for worse, people just don’t really have TVs in their house right now that are going to do 3-D in a way that’s going to work.”<\/p>\n

One of Spencer’s main criticisms of the technology is one echoed by many gamers; 3D glasses. “A bunch of people sitting around the living room wearing $150 glasses – I’m just not sure that’s kind of mainstream today,” he said. “Trying to get a bunch of people playing together in a room where not everybody sees the same thing … is kind of a weird disconnect to me.”<\/p>\n

Spencer did mention that he likes the Nintendo 3DS, which is set to introduce mobile 3D gaming early next year, sans glasses.<\/p>\n

Even though Spencer himself is not sold on 3D gaming, he stressed that Microsoft would by no means be ignoring the technology, stating that  he thinks “it is something that will play a role in entertainment.”<\/p>\n

Unlike Sony, however, who is pushing 3D gaming hard, at least partly due to its invested interests in selling 3D HD TVs, Microsoft has no special desire to promote the technology. <\/p>\n

3D TV’s have been available in South Africa for a few months now, with the likes of Sony, Samsung and LG all promoting their current generation LEDs. Pricing on these panels is also slowly gravitating towards the realms of reason, but it will be a long time before the technology becomes a housghold standard – if it ever does. This is especially true in SA, where high-end consumer technology is relatively expensive, and many gamers will have only invested in a regular HD TV in the past 2 years.<\/p>\n

The question is, will 3D continue being supported if it never graduates beyond a novelty feature? Or will manufacturers simply move on to a new marketing gimmick?<\/p>\n
