Blizzard made a lot of its fans very happy this weekend when it revealed its own DotA-style StarCraft II mod at BlizzCon. DotA and StarCraft II are two of the most well supported PC games in the world right now, and considering that DotA is a WarCraft III mod, it is hardly surprising that it is now being developed as a custom StarCraft II mod. <\/p>\n
As if the idea of DotA for StarCraft II wasn’t cool enough, Blizzard has revealed that the game’s heroes will be imported from a variety of its own franchises. Famous Blizzard characters confirmed to be playable in Blizzard Dota include StarCraft II’s Jim Raynor, Sarah Kerrigan, and Zeratul.<\/p>\n
WarCraft’s Sylvanas and Muradin have also been spotted, along with a baby Murloc wearing a Space Marine suit. Blizzard’s house mascot, “Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftan” will also be a playable character.<\/p>\n
The use of the name “DotA” may cause some confusion, since Valve is in the process of registering the trademark and has already announced DotA 2. Blizzard’s Rob pardo told Eurogamer<\/a> that he does not believe Valve’s decision to trademark the name is “the right thing to do.”<\/p>\n “To us, that means that you’re really taking it away from the Blizzard and Warcraft III community and that just doesn’t seem the right thing to do,” said Pardo. <\/p>\n Blizzard DotA will be free to download for anyone who owns StarCraft II. Blizzard also showed off some other mods, which they claim will be out in the next few months. Blizzard Dota is a larger project though, and is a “further way out.”<\/p>\n South Africa has thriving DotA and StarCraft II communities, and it will be interesting to see if these merge for the release of Blizzard Dota.
