When a community manager at PlayStation Asia accidentally quoted the death of PS Vita<\/a>, we wrote about it, not because we were at all shocked or concerned by the implications, but because we thought it rather funny. Because let\u2019s face it, the PS Vita has long had one foot in the grave.<\/p>\n

We won\u2019t deny that the massive increase in indie titles for the PS Vita has done wonders for its health \u2013 that is to say, it\u2019s no longer on life support. But it\u2019s still a pretty difficult console to recommend to anyone who is even remotely cash conscious.<\/p>\n

There are just too many games on platforms you already own or platforms worth saving for that are given far more love.<\/p>\n

So it really comes as no surprise that at a Q&A session at EGX<\/a>, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, for all intents and purposes confirmed that there is no PS Vita 2 on the horizon.<\/p>\n

When asked about potential plans for another portable console, he replied, “That’s a tough question.<\/em>” “People have mobile phones and it’s so easy to play games on smartphones,<\/em>” said Yoshida, following with, “And many games on smartphones are free, or free to start.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

He\u2019s not wrong. It\u2019s simply too difficult for most gamers, even core gamers, to justify a PS Vita when there are just so many other more affordable and just as enjoyable options. Much as Yoshida loves the PS Vita, he\u2019s well aware of that fact:<\/p>\n

I myself am a huge fan of PlayStation Vita and we worked really hard on designing every aspect. Touch-based games are fun – there are many games with really good design. But having sticks and buttons make things totally different.”<\/p>\n

“So I hope, like many of you, that this culture of playing portable games continues but the climate is not healthy for now because of the huge dominance of mobile gaming.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019ll take a drastic change in the videogaming climate before another portable console, the likes of the PS Vita, once again becomes feasible for Sony.<\/p>\n
