The digital games industry is set to generate more than $80-billion<\/strong> in software revenues this year\u201a according to data released by Juniper Research. The figure is expected to rise to $104-billion<\/strong> by the end of 2018<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Juniper\u201a based in the UK\u201a specialises in analysing trends in the mobile and digital tech sectors. The company\u2019s new research report\u201a \u201cWorldwide Digital Games Market 2015-2020\u201d\u201a is a comprehensive industry report covering the Mobile\u201a Tablet\u201a PC\u201a Console\u201a Handheld\u201a VR (virtual reality) and Cloud platforms.<\/p>\n

The report says that the majority of the expected growth will be from contributions made by the PC market\u201a which by itself accounted for 42% of games revenues this year.<\/p>\n

Mobile platforms are expected to account for 35% of market share by 2020\u201a while software for games consoles\u201a estimated at $21-billion<\/strong> this year\u201a is expected to reach $27-billion<\/strong> by 2018<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While there have been predictions that the console industry would decline\u201a Juniper\u2019s research indicates that the industry will continue to evolve to take advantage of new technological opportunities\u201a despite the platform already reaching its 8th generation.<\/p>\n

According to research author Lauren Foye: \u201cAs digital purchases gain favour with consumers\u201a we will see a drive in sales during the lifecycle of the current generation of consoles.<\/p>\n

Newly emerging technologies such as Virtual Reality will aid in consumer adoption\u201a as the console continues to evolve to become the core home entertainment centre.\u201d<\/p>\n

Juniper also expects integration across platforms to boost the console industry\u201a with Microsoft\u2019s planned addition of Windows 10 to the Xbox One in November enabling play between PC and Console in the upcoming title\u201a Fable Legends.<\/p>\n
