Torchlight burst onto the gaming scene just about a year ago and it registered an instant critical hit among gamers. The title currently sits with an average score of 83\/100 on Metacritic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Not bad for an indie outfit, although we shouldn’t have expected less considering the development pedigree behind developer Runic Studios. The team is headed up by ex-Blizzard employees whom had worked on Diablo I and II – brothers Max and Erich Schaefer and Travis Baldree.<\/p>\n

The three had previously formed the ill-fated Flagship Studios, responsible for the disastrous Hellgate London. Lessons learnt, they went on to form Runic and brought plenty of ex-Flagship employees with them.<\/p>\n

Torchlight was their first release and it reestablished the development team as a force to be reckoned with. Gamers loved it, critics loved it, and everyone is likely looking forward to the sequel Torchlight 2<\/a>, which will feature multiplayer over and above a single player action-RPG romp.<\/p>\n

In celebration of the one year anniversary of the PC launch of Torchlight, the game is on sale at the official Torchlight website<\/a> where it can be picked up for US$10 (±R70), 50% off the regular price. The special runs until 29 October 2010, 8am PST. Mac users aren’t so lucky however – their version launched in May 2010.<\/p>\n
