We\u2019ve known since early September that Microsoft has been forcing Windows 10\u2019s download on a number of users<\/a>, having it installed in the background without the user\u2019s notice.<\/p>\n

Of course, Windows 10 doesn\u2019t install itself upon completion of the download, not unless the user consents, but it\u2019s understandably upset a number of people irrespective of that fact.<\/p>\n

Not only will it eat the cap of anyone unfortunate enough not to have uncapped data, but it feels rather invasive too.<\/p>\n

In fact, it\u2019s that invasive nature of Windows 10 that concerns and stays the hand of many a Windows 7 and 8 user, but Microsoft is determined to increase the operating system\u2019s install base.<\/p>\n

110 million devices<\/a> is clearly not enough for Microsoft, who has decided that from next year, 2016, Windows 10 will install itself to virtually anyone who hasn\u2019t already made the upgrade.<\/p>\n

Upon completing the download, Microsoft\u2019s Terry Myerson tells The Verge<\/a>, “A user will be presented with a choice to install Windows 10.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

“They\u2019ll come back to their PC and there will be a dialog where they can choose to upgrade to Windows 10 or choose not to upgrade to Windows 10,<\/em>” said Myerson.<\/p>\n

Apparently, you can turn off Windows 10\u2019s nagging, deactivating the recommended installation prompt, but you will have to keep Automatic Downloads on a permanent leash if you wish to avoid the download.<\/p>\n

According to The Verge, Microsoft is also working on enticing pirates to join the genuine train.<\/p>\n

“If you try and upgrade a non-genuine PC to Windows 10 today it says the free upgrade is only available to genuine PCs,<\/em>” says Myerson. “We\u2019re seeing people be creative to get around that block, and then many are actually going to the Windows Store and buying a genuine license.<\/em>”<\/p>\n

It makes sense for Microsoft to have Windows 10 as widespread as possible, especially if they\u2019re to implement advertising into the OS<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As long as the OS doesn\u2019t force installations on users, Microsoft should come out of this relatively unscathed, but that\u2019s not a promise.<\/p>\n
