Hailed as the holy grail of collectibles, it’s unsurprising that so many people were scrambling after the Fallout 4<\/em> Pip-Boy Edition<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We bought the Pip-Boy Edition<\/a>, opened it up and, to be perfectly honest, were\u00a0underwhelmed and generally disappointed by the actual Pip-Boy replica.<\/p>\n

You can purchase it from Takealot at the moment<\/a>, despite claims of there being no stock if you didn’t pre-order the edition.\u00a0However, with a retail price of\u00a0 R<\/abbr>1, 799<\/strong> the quality just isn’t there in our opinion. <\/span><\/p>\n

To be blunt, the actual plastic of the Pip-Boy replica is rather cheap, the foam cuff has already started coming off and I’ve worn it on a grand total of one time.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

O<\/span>n top of that, we\u00a0see this breaking easily if you intend to use it quite a bit; the foam cuff in particularly looks like it will tear easily and the general build quality leaves a lot to be desired. Most of\u00a0knobs and doodads don’t really perform any real function.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

And so it came to be that our dreams of being a real-life vault dweller appear to be dashed. If you’re a cosplayer, we don’t think this was be the durable Pip-Boy prop you’re searching for.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not to mention that not all smartphones are compatible. You have to open a flap and use a foam insert to get your smartphone into the Pip-Boy.<\/span><\/p>\n

This\u00a0be a problem for people who don’t want to alter some of the foam inserts to fit their smartphone of choice or force their phone into the Pip-Boy and risk breaking the Pip-Boy in the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, we knew it was going to be gimmicky, but not this gimmicky. With such a high price\u00a0tag a higher level of quality for the final product was generally expected.<\/p>\n

We’re\u00a0not the only ones who have been disappointed. <\/span>Websites like Trusted Reviews<\/a>\u00a0and even Reddit threads<\/a> are popping up voicing initial disappointment at the lack of quality.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s what you get with the Pip-Boy Edition:<\/p>\n

On a side note, we felt that even the Capsule Case was quite fragile. In particular, the clips on the case appear to be quite breakable and the case is quite finicky to\u00a0close.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0could be a quality control issue we experienced,\u00a0as some people seem to be in love with the Pip-Boy edition. But we tend to agree with websites like Engadget that in many ways it’s just a glorified smartphone case<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If you’re purely looking for a\u00a0Fallout 4<\/em> collectible to show off on \u00a0your shelf at home, then this may not be\u00a0the way to go. In fact, we’d recommend the Fallout Anthology<\/a><\/em> instead.<\/p>\n

Even with the companion app integration, for us the quality just isn’t there, and if you want to make use of the\u00a0Pip-Boy\u00a0<\/em>as part of a second-screen experience it would prove to\u00a0be quite cumbersome.<\/p>\n
