{"id":84979,"date":"2016-01-05T13:00:47","date_gmt":"2016-01-05T11:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=84979"},"modified":"2016-01-05T13:07:59","modified_gmt":"2016-01-05T11:07:59","slug":"new-polaris-architecture-by-amd-means-a-promising-future-for-compact-gaming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/84979-new-polaris-architecture-by-amd-means-a-promising-future-for-compact-gaming","title":{"rendered":"New Polaris architecture by AMD means a promising future for compact gaming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AMD has provided a glimpse of its upcoming 2016 Polaris GPU architecture, highlighting a range of architectural improvements.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the improvements include HDR monitor support, and \u201cindustry-leading\u201d performance-per-watt.<\/p>\n<p>AMD\u2019s Polaris 14nm FinFET GPUs deliver a generational jump in power efficiency, said the company.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0GPUs are designed for fluid frame rates in graphics, gaming, VR, and multimedia applications running on small form-factor computer designs.<\/p>\n<p>The Polaris architecture features AMD\u2019s 4th generation Graphics Core Next architecture, a next-generation display engine with support for HDMI 2.0a and DisplayPort 1.3, and next-generation multimedia features including 4K h.265 encoding and decoding.<\/p>\n<p>AMD expects shipments of Polaris architecture-based GPUs to begin in mid-2016.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>As far as performance is concerned, internal tests over at AMD demonstrate <em>Star Wars Battlefront<\/em> maintaining a steady 60fps on medium settings at 1080p, and all why while consuming 60% less power than what a GTX 950 needs to perform the same task \u2013 that\u2019s a considerable bump to power efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Performance comparable to the GTX 950 clearly points to Polaris being an entry-level architecture, and not meant to replace Fiji (powering their <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/77402-amds-r9-fury-cards-are-here-enter-the-r9-fury-x2.html\" target=\"_blank\">Fury<\/a> cards) or Grenada (used in the R9\u00a0390 and <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/77870-amds-radeon-r9-fury-x-and-r9-390x-performance-vs-price.html\" target=\"_blank\">R9 390X<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>That task is meant for their <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/80375-greenland-baffin-and-ellesmere-amds-newest-gpus.html\" target=\"_blank\">Greenland architecture<\/a>, the likely successor to Fiji and opposition to NVIDIA\u2019s mighty <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/83605-nvidia-confirms-pascal-has-16gb-of-hbm2-memory-and-1tbs-bandwidth.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pascal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What Polaris will mean, however, is far more capable, compact gaming devices.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because the more performance you can squeeze out of each watt, the more you\u2019ll be able to achieve with limited power and heat budgets in mobile as well as ultra-small devices.<\/p>\n<p>And because Polaris sports all of the features gamers might require, it\u2019s that much more appealing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/AMD-Polaris-Key-Features-Table.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-84981\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-84981\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/AMD-Polaris-Key-Features-Table.jpg\" alt=\"AMD Polaris -
