Before I get into why that\u2019s a good thing for the legitimate consumer, those of us who pay good money for our games, I\u2019d like to address a statement by 3DM \u2013 that as a result \u201cthere will be no free games to play in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
That\u2019s an odd statement because it\u2019s completely untrue, balderdash, poppycock, fallacious, unfounded and just plain wrong.<\/p>\n
We\u2019re going to call out a few games, see if you can spot what they all have in common: Dota 2<\/em>, Heroes of the Storm<\/em>, League of Legends<\/em>, Planetside 2<\/em>, World of Tanks<\/em>, Hearthstone<\/em>, Hawken<\/em>, Team Fortress 2<\/em>, Quake Live<\/em>, TERA<\/em>, Smite<\/em>, Star Wars: The Old Republic<\/em>, Path of Exile<\/em>, Warframe<\/em>, War Thunder<\/em>, Super Crate Box<\/em>, Spelunky Classic<\/em>, Beneath a Steel Sky<\/em> and Cave Story<\/em> all have in common? They\u2019re all either completely free or free-to-play.<\/p>\n And even when a game isn\u2019t free, the right combination of sales will see a huge selection of titles going for next to nothing.<\/p>\n With the right PlayStation Store, Steam, GoG, Xbox Live or Humble Bundle sale, among many other options, you\u2019ll be able to purchase more games than you can shake a stick at, and for less than the price of a single new title no less.<\/p>\n In fact, for less than it\u2019d cost you to go to the movies, you can scoop up some truly incredible games \u2013 we\u2019re talking AAA games as well.<\/p>\n Very nearly every game currently sold can be picked up for next to nothing, relative to their launch price, as long as you\u2019re willing to wait \u2013 and it\u2019s not like you won\u2019t have 300 other games to play while you do.<\/p>\n We\u2019re well aware that there are a number of you who are hurting for a decent salary or wage, and purchasing games can be incredibly costly. To those of you, you have our sympathies. We\u2019ve all been in that spot, some of us still are on occasion.<\/p>\n No one wants to have to fight for every cent earned. But trust us, with the right know how, there\u2019s a whole world of affordable, enjoyable gaming to be had.<\/p>\n Beyond just purchasing games on discount, you can try services like EA Access<\/a> for the Xbox One or the newly minted Origin Access<\/a>.<\/p>\n Then there\u2019s services that give you games in exchange for a subscription, like Humble Bundle Monthly<\/a> for PC gamers, Xbox Live\u2019s Games with Gold<\/a> and PlayStation Plus<\/a>.<\/p>\n But back to those pirates. It\u2019s because of you \u2013 those who not only crack but distribute those cracked games \u2013that we, the legitimate customer, have to suffer through any number of security barriers, many of which can negatively impact our experience.<\/p>\n DRM is there, in part, because publishers are uncompromising and unwilling to invest too much time into the customer experience, but mostly because there\u2019s piracy in the first place.<\/p>\n Big publishers are primarily to blame for poor DRM implementation, but they\u2019re also the ones with the most to lose. They invest mind bogglingly vast sums of money into AAA titles, and when profit margins slip because people to refuse to pay for their games, shareholders pull their funding, people lose their jobs and the next game suffers.<\/p>\n There are a number of hard working developers who deserve remuneration for their efforts, and instead they\u2019ve been sacked.<\/p>\n Not all games sell badly because they were pirated to the moon and back, any number of factors can affect the sales of a game, but many did.<\/p>\n So good riddance to you, we say. And because a few of us at MyGaming are primarily PC gamers, those most affected by DRM, please let the door hit you on the way out.
