{"id":85821,"date":"2016-02-02T12:00:11","date_gmt":"2016-02-02T10:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=85821"},"modified":"2016-02-02T12:02:18","modified_gmt":"2016-02-02T10:02:18","slug":"amd-demonstrates-its-12-tflop-dual-gpu-monster-the-fury-x2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/85821-amd-demonstrates-its-12-tflop-dual-gpu-monster-the-fury-x2","title":{"rendered":"AMD demonstrates its 12 TFLOP dual-GPU monster, the Fury X2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For all of the acclaim the unofficially named R9 Fury X2 has garnered, AMD hasn\u2019t done much more than wave a dual-chip PCB in the year, proclaiming it the best GPU for virtual reality and calling it a day.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s been the case for very nearly every event the Fury X2 is brought up in conversation, followed by AMD\u2019s assurance that the card is kind of\u2026 sort of ready, and that it has just been delayed to <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/84839-amds-r9-fury-x2-is-delayed-to-coincide-with-vr-headsets-launch.html\" target=\"_blank\">coincide with the release of VR headsets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been talking about AMD\u2019s dual-Fiji GPU, codenamed \u2018Gemini\u2019, <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/77402-amds-r9-fury-cards-are-here-enter-the-r9-fury-x2.html\" target=\"_blank\">for some time now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of that discussion has centred on the use of two Fiji XT chips, the same chip that powers the beastly <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/77870-amds-radeon-r9-fury-x-and-r9-390x-performance-vs-price.html\" target=\"_blank\">Radeon R9 Fury X<\/a>, on a single PCB.<\/p>\n<p>The result is 8192 stream processors, 8GB of HBM (<a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/75064-amds-next-gpus-launch-soon-to-sport-high-bandwidth-memory.html\" target=\"_blank\">first generation<\/a>) memory and more than a terabyte a second of bandwidth.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_83949\" style=\"width: 4202px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/AMD-Dual-Fiji-XT-R9-Fury-X2-Gemini.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-83949\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83949\" class=\"wp-image-83949 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/AMD-Dual-Fiji-XT-R9-Fury-X2-Gemini.jpg\" alt=\"AMD-Dual-Fiji-XT-R9-Fury-X2-Gemini\" width=\"4192\" height=\"2158\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-83949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Even the GeForce GTX Titan X would shiver at the site of this card.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Well, it seems like a report by <a href=\"https:\/\/benchlife.info\/amd-r9-fury-x2-codename-gemini-will-paper-launch-in-dec-mp-will-be-march-2016-12012015\/\" target=\"_blank\">Benchlife.info<\/a> last year that t<a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/84067-radeon-r9-fury-x2-will-only-be-available-in-2016.html\" target=\"_blank\">he card would receive a soft launch during February or March<\/a> was right on the money.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, during VRLA 2016 Winter Expo in Los Angeles, which just recently took place, AMD\u2019s Roy Taylor not only revealed the compute performance the card is capable of, but Falcon Northwest demonstrated their latest ultra-compact Tiki PC, which just happens to use a Fury X2.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Big thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AMDRadeon?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AMDRadeon<\/a> engineers for making this possible! It may only be 0.5 TFLOPs more than the R9\u00a0295X2, but it does so with significantly less power draw. And it\u2019s still 5 TFLOPs more than NVIDIA\u2019s Titan X can manage.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also more compute than every component in this <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/81005-an-r9-nano-powers-this-nearly-r100-000-10-tflop-pc.html\" target=\"_blank\">R100,000 PC<\/a> can manage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Last time I was here I also promised you that we would make the world\u2019s most powerful small computer for developers. We promised you we would take two of our highest end GPUs and put it inside that tiny box and if you go downstairs we actually have a demonstration of a dual GPU, 12 TeraFlops, fastest GPU solution in the world, inside of Tiki. It\u2019s a feat of engineering we are delighted with,<\/em>\u201d said Taylor.<\/p>\n<p>We were hoping for a little more compute performance from the Fury X2, but its performance at its reported TDP is pretty significant. Falcon\u2019s latest Tiki performs.<\/p>\n<p>It might have something to do with the compute of the Fury X2 being lower than expected, but the last Tiki we covered was an <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/76148-this-tiny-18-core-pc-is-more-powerful-than-you-could-possibly-imagine.html\" target=\"_blank\">absurdly overspecced<\/a> 18-core (36-thread) ultra-compact PC the size of an Xbox 360 (smaller in fact), sporting a GTX Titan X and priced roughly <strong>R110,000<\/strong> at the time of that piece.<\/p>\n<p>And we can\u2019t wait to see AMD\u2019s own Fury X2 project, the <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/80649-a-peek-inside-amds-all-powerful-ultra-small-pc-the-quantum.html\" target=\"_blank\">Quantum<\/a>, realised \u2013 perhaps the most amazing ultra-compact, bespoke PC we\u2019ve ever laid our eyes on.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps <a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/hardware\/85221-amds-zen-cpus-and-why-you-should-care.html\" target=\"_blank\">Zen<\/a> is what\u2019s necessary to make that happen.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3
