{"id":85949,"date":"2016-02-05T14:00:45","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T12:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=85949"},"modified":"2016-02-05T14:06:21","modified_gmt":"2016-02-05T12:06:21","slug":"dave-mirra-bmx-star-and-extreme-sports-icon-has-died-aged-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/business\/85949-dave-mirra-bmx-star-and-extreme-sports-icon-has-died-aged-41","title":{"rendered":"Dave Mirra, BMX star and extreme sports icon has died aged 41"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Tony Hawk\u2019s Pro Skater <\/em>may have been the de facto standard when it comes to trick\/extreme sport titles, but <em>Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX<\/em> was still pretty great.<\/p>\n<p>It certainly had all the trappings of a great game: enjoyable gameplay; it was accessible but offered a high skill ceiling; and its soundtrack was\u2026 ahem\u2026 sublime.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OHucDrHwBXY\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, we&#8217;ve received the rather sad news that the game&#8217;s star and all round extreme sports icon, Dave Mirra, has passed away at the age of 41.<\/p>\n<p>Reports state an attempted suicide, but that\u2019s not something we want to fixate on. Instead, we\u2019re recalling all of the hours of fun we had with the <em>Freestyle BMX <\/em>series.<\/p>\n<p>The pro BMX biker lent his name to the series at the prime of his career, having achieved more medals at the X Games than very nearly anyone else \u2013 winning at least one medal in almost every year between 1995 and 2009.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also known for competing any number of Ironman competitions, endurance racers, bicycle marathons and even rally car driving.<\/p>\n<p>We so often miss a celebrity following their death, not because we knew them but that we saw ourselves in their work, their accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>Dave Mirra was not a personal buddy of ours, but did what he enjoyed, what he loved, and we should strive for much the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>That said, a true friend of Dave Mirra\u2019s did have something to say, and he befittingly starred in another game we cherished as kids.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Goodbye Dave Mirra, a true pioneer, icon and legend.
