Some cheap USB Type-C cables sold on Amazon can cause too much current to be delivered over your PC\u2019s USB ports and will fry your machine,\u00a0The Verge reported<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

USB Type-C is the latest USB standard, which\u00a0features a small profile and reversible plug.<\/p>\n

The issue stems from the backwards compatibility built into the standard which lets new devices with USB-C ports connect and charge via older ports on existing PCs.<\/p>\n

Google engineer Benson Leung,\u00a0in the course of testing various Type-C cables<\/a><\/strong>, plugged one into his Chromebook Pixel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI directly analysed the Surjtech cable using a Type-C breakout board and a multimeter, and it appears that they completely mis-wired the cable,<\/em>\u201d said Leung.<\/p>\n

This resulted in his laptop being destroyed.<\/p>\n

The USB-IF said it has checked 61 cables and advised buyers to look out for its logos:<\/p>\n

A\u00a0group of redditors also\u00a0maintain a spreadsheet<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0with details on all the cables that have been tested.<\/p>\n
