devices, but deliver an array of uses through a single cable.<\/p>\n<p>New devices like Apple\u2019s 2015 MacBook, Google\u2019s Chromebook Pixel, and Asus\u2019s\u00a015.6-inch portable companion monitor all\u00a0use the standard.<\/p>\n<p>What makes the Asus monitor standout is that its USB-C connection is used for\u00a0both power and video transmission.<\/p>\n<p>Intel\u2019s Thunderbolt 3 hardware interface, which uses a USB-C connection, also allows for multiple uses through a single port, as detailed below.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>USB Type-C, USB 3.1, and Thunderbolt 3<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>With the launch of any new set of technical specifications, terminology can become conflated.<\/p>\n<p>The development of USB 3.1 at roughly the same time as USB Type-C added to this confusion, along with the addition of the launch of Thunderbolt 3.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the differences:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>USB Type-C<\/strong>: A physical connector, which uses a reversible plug and related port (as pictured above).<\/li>\n<li><strong>USB 3.1<\/strong>: A technology standard that can transfer data up to 10Gbps.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Thunderbolt 3<\/strong>: A hardware interface that uses the USB Type-C connector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\"><strong>What Thunderbolt 3 can do<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Intel describes Thunderbolt 3 as \u201cthe fastest, most versatile connection to any dock, display, or peripheral device\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThunderbolt was developed to simultaneously support the fastest data and most video bandwidth available on a single cable, while also supplying power,\u201d said Intel.<\/p>\n<p>It features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Data transfer rates of up to 40Gbps<\/li>\n<li>Drive two 4K (3,840 \u00d7 2,160) displays at 60Hz<\/li>\n<li>System charging up to 100W<\/li>\n<li>USB 3.1 compatible<\/li>\n<li>4 lanes of PCI Express Gen 3<\/li>\n<li>8 lanes of DisplayPort 1.2<\/li>\n<li>15W to bus-powered devices<\/li>\n<li>10Gb Ethernet connection between computers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>High-end gaming laptops like the\u00a0Razer Blade Stealth, and the Asus\u00a0Z170-Premium motherboard already make use of Thunderbolt 3 \u2013 with more
