A recent controversy has struck Blizzard’s upcoming multiplayer first-person\u00a0shooter Overwatch<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This controversy involves a sexy victory pose for Overwatch<\/em>‘s\u00a0female character Tracer, which all originated from a forum post on Blizzard’s forums<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the post, a user named Fipps initially praised\u00a0Overwatch<\/em>‘s female cast. However, Fipps indicated displeasure \u00a0at this particular pose for Tracer, which you can see below.<\/p>\n

Flipps stated the following about the game:<\/p>\n

So I wanted to start off by saying, I think the development team has done a pretty great job with the cast of female heroes in Overwatch<\/em>. They are diverse, interesting, and compelling. From Mei to Zarya to Widowmaker the female cast reflects a large spectrum of personalities and player fantasies.\u00a0Then out of seemingly no where we have this pose.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fipps argues that Tracer’s sexy pose reduces her to merely a female sex symbol. In closing, Fipps states:<\/p>\n

What I’m asking is that as you continue to add to the Overwatch<\/em> cast and investment elements, you double down on your commitment to create strong female characters. You’ve been doing a good job so far, but shipping with a Tracer pose like this undermines so much of the good you’ve already done.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The forum thread eventually received a response<\/a> from Overwatch<\/em>‘s Game Director, Jeff Kaplan, who said:<\/p>\n

We’ll replace the pose. We want everyone<\/strong> to feel strong and heroic in our community. The last thing we want to do is make someone feel uncomfortable, under-appreciated or misrepresented. Apologies and we’ll continue to try to do better.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Kaplan further qualified his reasoning for his\u00a0earlier statement, saying:<\/p>\n

While I stand by my previous comment, I realize I should have been more clear. As the game director, I have final creative say over what does or does not go into the game. With this particular decision, it was an easy one to make-not just for me, but for the art team as well … We wouldn’t do anything to sacrifice our creative vision for Overwatch<\/em>, and we’re not going to remove something solely because someone may take issue with it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Overwatch<\/em>‘s customisation is an optional feature and the cosmetic rewards you receive aren’t mandatory. You level up your character, earn loot boxes that contain skins, victory poses, sprays and more.<\/p>\n
