Blizzard has finally commented on pirated World of Warcraft servers.<\/p>\n
This follows the closing of the popular Nostalrius<\/a><\/strong> server and a petition of nearly 100,000 signatures requesting that Blizzard change its stance on Legacy servers.<\/p>\n Blizzard employee “Nethaera” posted the company’s official statement on the EU battle.net forums:<\/p>\n We have been discussing classic servers for years – it\u2019s a topic every BlizzCon – and especially over the past few weeks.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n From active internal team discussions to after-hours meetings with leadership, this subject has been highly debated. Some of our current thoughts:<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why not just let Nostalrius continue the way it was? The honest answer is, failure to protect against intellectual property infringement would damage Blizzard\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n This applies to anything that uses WoW\u2019s IP, including unofficial servers. And while we\u2019ve looked into the possibility \u2013 there is not a clear legal path to protect Blizzard\u2019s IP and grant an operating license to a pirate server.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n We explored options for developing classic servers and none could be executed without great difficulty.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n If we could push a button and all of this would be created, we would.
