Game modifications are one of the great advantages of PC gaming. Should a modifiable game become a bit boring in its vanilla state, then one need simply hop on the internet and discover a cool modification that refreshes the gameplay.<\/p>\n

Of course, there are good mods, and then there are the best mods. Respected game modification website ModDB has operated as a gathering point for modders and players for many years, and they have just wrapped up the voting for the best mods of 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Mod of the Year awards just ended their ninth iteration. For the first time, members of various respected gaming press outlets have contributed their expertise to the editors choice modification categories.<\/p>\n

There are no guns, explosions or nanosuits involved. Just an old man who follows mysterious fireflies through mountains and dark caves, sleeping villages and frozen woods, and has to use all kinds of mechanisms to open his path, while battling to stay alive in the winter cold.<\/p>\n

Dear Esther<\/a><\/span> – An award-winning, critically acclaimed, experimental first-person game.<\/p>\n

Built in the Source engine, it abandons traditional gameplay, leaving only a rich world soaked in atmosphere, and an abstract, poetic story to explore. Dear Esther was originally launched in 2008 and is currently being rebuilt by Robert Briscoe.<\/p>\n

Following the ethos of mimicking a Relic Entertainment expansion pack, Eastern Front has succeeded in adding a full Soviet faction to the existing armies, packed with unique and exciting units – a feat never before achieved in the Company of Heroes world.<\/p>\n

Nehrim: At Fate’s Edge<\/a><\/span> – A total conversion for RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.<\/p>\n

It is a self-contained game that is based upon the Oblivion game engine, but has no relation to Oblivion’s lore. It is a world in which neither Tamriel nor any other TES based name exists. The continent itself on which the game is situated is called Nehrim – it is completely independent from the base game.<\/p>\n
