PrimeSense – the Israeli company behind the Kinect technology – has teamed up with Taiwan’s Asus to develop a similar device for media centre PCs. The weirdly-named WAVI Xtion is designed to recognise gestures in much the same way as Kinect.<\/p>\n

The ‘Xtion’ portion of the name comes from PrimeSense’s 3D capture technology, which is callled Xtion. The transmitter and receiverportion of the technology is named WAVI (Wireless Audio & Video Interactiom).<\/p>\n

PrimeSense and Asus are claiming that the device will be used to control and browse multimedia, interface with gesture-based games, and interestingly, it will somehow be integrated will social networking services (lending new meaning to the Facebook ‘poke’ function).<\/p>\n

That’s the idea for launch, anyway. Once the WAVI Xtion hits the market sometime this year, Asus will open up an “Xtion Online Store” where devs will be able to sell apps for the Xtion PRO platform. Prepare for an onslaught of sex game controversy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The dev technology is scheduled to go live in February 2011. The WAVI Xtion itself is prepping for a Consumer Electronics Show<\/a> (CES) appearance later this week.<\/p>\n
