Dimitri\u00a0‘Detrony’ Hadjipaschali<\/strong> is one of the top Counter-Strike: Global Offensive players in South Africa.<\/p>\n

He is the captain of Bravado Gaming’s CS:GO team, who won the DGL Master Series<\/a><\/strong> earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Bravado Gaming are the undisputed champions of South African eSports, and have regularly emerged victorious from\u00a0the country’s most prestigious Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 tournaments.<\/p>\n

MyGaming caught up with Dimitri ‘Detrony’ Hadjipaschali to find out more about the pro gaming scene in South Africa, what games he likes to play, and what his rig looks like.<\/p>\n

Are you a full-time gamer or do you have a day job?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am currently working on a few private part-time projects aside from Counter-Strike, but I get at least 5-6 hours of Counter-Strike in per day. So you may as well consider it full-time.<\/p>\n

How long have you been playing Counter-Strike?<\/strong><\/p>\n

12 years.<\/p>\n

How many hours per day do you practice competitive Counter-Strike?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When there is not much going on in terms of tournaments, perhaps during a week day, I will put in about 5 – 8 hours in general both individually and with the team, and less on weekends.<\/p>\n

These hours may increase in the weeks before a tournament\/competition.<\/p>\n

How much money per year do you make from gaming \u2013 through prize money,\u00a0sponsors, and team salary?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Locally, prize money earnings could be anything from about R25,000 – R35,000 for 2016 thus far, but the increase in tournaments and money being put into competitions in the near future means there will be\u00a0more money to be made through these.<\/p>\n

I can not really mention what we get in terms of cash flow from sponsors, but I can say that we have never had trouble when it comes to financing teams or accommodating players, be it domestically or internationally when opportunities arise. We have been looked after really well.<\/p>\n

Do you think it is possible to sustain yourself financially in South Africa as a full-time gamer?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Right now, probably not – although if you really tried, you could get away with it – but it’s not a gamble to take.<\/p>\n

However, its definitely getting to that level, with increases in sponsorship finance, event prize money, etc.<\/p>\n

\n

Which games do you like to play, apart from CS: GO?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I occasionally play Quake Live, as this was my other competitive title I took up for many years, but for now it’s really only Counter-Strike, where my heart lies and where my time goes to.<\/p>\n

For what I want to achieve individually,\u00a0I really have no time for other games.<\/p>\n

What has been the highlight of your professional gaming career so far?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I can recall many highlights and great flashbacks, but from the top of my head, I remember when I attended DreamHack Winter for Quake Live in 2013 and ended up taking a map off Evil (the previous champion) in Bo3 in groups.<\/p>\n

It was such a great feeling back then, having the entire Quake community and just many general gamers in South Africa back home supporting and rooting for me during the event.<\/p>\n

Apart from gaming, what activities do you like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I spend a lot of time with my family and girlfriend. I put quite a bit of time into playing poker (as I used to do this much more in the past),\u00a0going to the gym, and trying to keep active overall!<\/p>\n
