Data collected from mobile phones point to what is the largest gathering in human history, reports a recent study <\/a><\/strong>conducted by Cornell University.<\/p>\n

The Kumbh Mela takes<\/a> <\/strong>place every 12 years on the banks of the river Ganges in Allahabad, where Hindus gather to bathe in the sacred river.<\/p>\n

It was previously known to be one of the world’s biggest gatherings, but now their is definitive proof of just how many people attended.<\/p>\n

By gathering mobile phone records from 1 January to 31 March 2013<\/strong>, Cornell researcher Ian Barnett and his team were able to obtain over 400 million communication events, including 146 million texts and 245 million calls.<\/p>\n

The team then cross-referenced these calls with area codes used and came to a massive 61 million peak attendees<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This makes it the largest gathering in the history of humanity.<\/p>\n
