The University of Calgary has paid <\/strong><\/a>20,000 Canadian dollars (R231,636) worth of bitcoins to hackers after it was unable to restore the damage they caused.<\/p>\n

Thousands of vital emails and files were maliciously encrypted, locking faculty and students out of vital materials.<\/p>\n

“The university is now in the process of assessing and evaluating the decryption keys,” said the university’s vice president Linda Dalgetty<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“The actual process of decryption is time-consuming and must be performed with care.<\/p>\n

“It is important to note that decryption keys do not automatically restore all systems or guarantee the recovery of all data.”<\/p>\n

There is growing concern <\/a><\/strong>over the frequency of ransomware attacks, especially in instances where the victims have no choice but to pay out.<\/p>\n
