Nvidia <\/a><\/strong>and AMD <\/a><\/strong>recently announced their next generation of graphics cards, both of which seem to offer some of the best cost-to-performance ratios ever.<\/p>\n

However, these cheaper prices don’t necessarily translate to the South African market, with the GTX 1070 coming in at R8,499<\/a><\/strong> compared to the US MSRP\u00a0of $379 (R5,790) <\/strong>–\u00a0a difference of R2,700 at the current exchange rate.<\/p>\n

Similarly the GTX 1080 Founders Edition<\/a><\/strong> retails at around R13,499 compared to a $599 announced<\/a>\u00a0 <\/strong>price (R9,000) in the US.<\/p>\n

Is this problem uniquely South African? Are we being charged too much as a country? We asked Rune Ravnsborg, owner of Rebeltech<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“In my opinion \u2013 no we are not taking into account all factors,” said Ravnsborg.<\/p>\n

“If you look at India, the price on a GTX 1080 FE is listed at RS. 66,500 which is close to R15,133<\/strong>, while in the UK, the GTX 1080 FE is listed at \u00a3619.00 which is close to R13,402.45<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

He also believes that competition among South African suppliers plays a factor:<\/p>\n

“Without a doubt, competition is always very healthy as it keeps the pricing from skyrocketing.”<\/p>\n
