New technology recently installed on the International Space Station is designed to form the basis of an internet-style network spanning the whole (or most) of our cosmic neighborhood, reports Futurism<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

DTN (Delay\/Disruption Tolerant Networking)<\/strong> provides a reliable and automatic “store and forward” network that only transmits when all of the partial data bundles can be received and re-bundled at the final destination.<\/p>\n

This technology could not only benefit those living on earth, but spacecraft in deep space and possibly even manned colonies.<\/p>\n

Its first and most practical use however, will be to improve mobile networks.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur experience with DTN on the space station leads to additional terrestrial applications especially for mobile communications in which connections may be erratic and discontinuous,\u201d said Dr. Vinton G. Cerf<\/a><\/strong>, a visiting scientist at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory working on the DTN.<\/p>\n
