The 3.56 update was designed to put an end to a recent security hack which allows people to run unlicensed software on the console, including cracked games and hacks for online games.

Sadly for Sony, their countermeasure was hacked within a few hours of release, and hackers continued to have their way with the console.

Long story short: the entire episode was an exercise in futility.

However, it would seem that the story does not end there, and reports are coming in hard and fast claiming that since the update, users are unable to replace their PS3 hard drives.

One of the PS3’s nifty features is that it is quite easy to purchase a PS3 compatible PC hard drive and install it in the console, greatly extending its storage potential. Or at least it used to be. Sony already locked PS2 games out of the PS3 ages ago, and more recently it stopped users from being able to install Linux on the console. Could hard drive swaps be the latest casualty of Sony’s war on hackers?

Reports indicate that only the 16MB flash PS3 consoles are being affected. This includes all PS3 Slims.

Hopefully the issue is a bug, and not a deliberate move to prevent users from swapping the console’s hard drive. Sony has yet to comment.

Have you experienced trouble swapping out your PS3 hard drive since firmware update 3.56?
