{"id":98350,"date":"2016-07-12T14:56:22","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T12:56:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=98350"},"modified":"2016-07-12T15:14:34","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T13:14:34","slug":"amd-radeon-graphics-cards-just-got-a-massive-performance-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/pc\/98350-amd-radeon-graphics-cards-just-got-a-massive-performance-boost","title":{"rendered":"AMD Radeon graphics cards just got a massive performance boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vulkan support was patched into Bethesda&#8217;s DOOM recently, allowing gamers to take full advantage of the new low-level API set to compete with DirectX 12.<\/p>\n<p>Although most games use <strong>DirectX 12<\/strong>, many companies are attempting to shift developers towards the Vulkan API, as DirectX 12 is only supported on Windows, while Vulkan is supported across all major platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Several DOOM benchmarks have emerged online, detailing the increased performance of AMD Radeon graphics cards thanks to the implementation of Vulkan, although the performance of Nvidia cards seems unaffected, if not decreased.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guru3d.com\/news-story\/new-patch-brings-vulkan-support-to-doom.html\" target=\"_blank\">3DGuru <\/a><\/strong>has run benchmarks using the<strong> Radeon RX 480<\/strong> and <strong>GeForce GTX 1070<\/strong> and compared their performance improvement using the Vulkan API.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Radeon-RX-480-Vulkan-vs-OpenGL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-98352\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Radeon-RX-480-Vulkan-vs-OpenGL.jpg\" alt=\"Radeon RX 480 Vulkan vs OpenGL\" width=\"684\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GeForce-GTX-1070-Vulkan-vs-OpenGL.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-98354\" src=\"http:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GeForce-GTX-1070-Vulkan-vs-OpenGL.jpg\" alt=\"GeForce GTX 1070 Vulkan vs OpenGL\" width=\"684\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The performance boost shown in the above benchmarks seems to apply to all AMD cards, with some Reddit users with <strong>older Radeon GPUs reporting a frame-rate increase of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Amd\/comments\/4sd75l\/doom_123_vulcan_performance_increase_on_r9_280x\/?st=iqjfbzwz&amp;sh=4c7331a0\" target=\"_blank\">up to 123% <\/a><\/strong>in Bethesda&#8217;s DOOM.<\/p>\n<p>DOOM also allows users to use\u00a0the OpenGL API, which is not as efficient as Vulkan or DirectX 12.<\/p>\n<p>AMD independently reported a <strong>performance increase of 27%<\/strong> using the Radeon RX 480 and Vulkan in DOOM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you think of Vulkan offering increased performance for AMD cards?
