Microsoft issues phishing scam alert on Xbox LIVE

It looks like it’s not only the PlayStation Network that’s been the target of some of society’s more, um, disreputable types. Microsoft has issued a warning to its own Xbox LIVE network users that something phishy is going on in Modern Warfare 2’s matchmaking service. Which does seem sort of strangely appropriate.

According to a status update posted on the Xbox.com site, Xbox LIVE matchmaking is currently tagged with a big red “Alert!”, saying that:

“Users may experience difficulties with the following services:

    * Users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2.

We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.”

Of course, anybody who’s spent any amount of time in Call of Duty matchmaking is probably well aware of the sorts of malefactors lurking around there, offering instant passes to level 10 Prestige in exchange for money, so nothing new here. Remember, kids – don’t hand over your passwords, no matter how nice that girl with the huge boobs and wobbly morals seems. Like that wasn’t already self-evident or something.
