Gears of War shifts 3 million units in launch week

30 September 2011

Delta Squad’s last gib-spattered hurrah has pushed 3 million copies in its first week on shelves, making it the year’s biggest launch so far (or at least until Modern Warfare 3 comes out, anyway) – so sayeth the Microsoft PR druids.

According to the gloaty press stuff, Gears of War 3 has not only banked more in one week than any other 2011 game has during the whole year so far, it has also pushed the series past the $1 billion mark in lifetime sales.

Apparently chainsaw guns just have that kind of appeal.

“Gears of War was the first killer app for Xbox 360, and the series has continued to contribute directly to the overall success of the platform ever since,” said Microsoft Corporate Vice President Phil Spencer.

“Gears of War 3 kicked off the biggest Christmas period in Xbox history, setting the standard for the kind of amazing, action-packed experiences gamers should expect on Xbox 360 this year.”
