The Gears of War franchise sits right alongside Halo in the Xbox 360 throne room. The commercial and critical success that both Gears of War and its sequel have enjoyed, is paralleled by very few games, and when it comes to exclusives, Gears of War is a definitive system seller. Indeed, when asked which HD console to choose, many enthusiast will list exclusive content as a selling point.
In recent months, some would argue that Sony has pushed ahead in terms of title exclusivity, with titles like Uncharted 2, God of War 3 and Heavy Rain really making a strong argument for the PS3.
Mass Effect 2 remains the strongest recent contender to change the minds of fence sitters in favour of Microsoft’s console. However, the rumour mill has just sputtered out some interesting Gears of War 3 details
The rumours can be attributed to Edge Online this time. According to them, a source close to Microsoft have revealed the following:
– There will be new enemies which feature “tentacle like” appendages. This will significantly alter combat situations.
– COG members of Delta Squad will have “explosives that can travel beneath the ground to take out enemy cover positions.”
– Players will be able to pilot combat mechs.
– The game will be set during the summer, and will feature new locations, some of which will be under water.
– There may be jungle based settings, marking a departure from the mostly grey colour palette used in the first two games.
Microsoft has not made any official announcements about Gears of War 3, and told Edge that it does not comment on rumours and speculation. It is known however that Gears of War mastermind Cliff Bleszinski will be revealing a new game on Monday, and we are pretty certain that it will be GOW3. Given that Edge is one of the most highly respected video game publications in the world, we are inclined to take their reports quite seriously.
