Everything you need to know about the Halo Reach beta

21 April 2010

With the release of the Halo Reach public multiplayer beta a week away you are going to be kicking yourself if you traded your copy of Halo 3 ODST, as invitation codes are contained therein.

Now obviously not all multiplayer game modes are going to be available off the bat [this is a beta after all] but Bungie has confirmed we will have a few juicy modes to test out.

Slayer & Team Slayer [Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch for the uninitiated] do make it as well as some other Halo 3 & Halo 2 favourites like Odd Ball, 1 Flag, Crazy King and revamp of the Free-for-all mode called Juggernaut in which one player is the Juggernaut and becomes unkillable, super fast, armed with a gravity hammer, able to defy gravity and… ON FIRE. Yes you read that right, the Juggernaut will be on frikken fire. This however only lasts a limited time and when the time runs out the Juggernaut goes from Hunter to Hunted. Whoever takes down the Juggernaut becomes the next Jugg.
Now onto the juicy stuff, the new multiplayer modes.

Head Hunter

In the Beta only the free-for-all version of Head Hunter will be playable. In this mode skulls drop from downed enemies for you to scoop up and then deposit into one of the moving territories.  Sounds easy doesn’t it? Well don’t be fooled, the more skulls you carry the bigger target you will become so not only will Skull inventory  management be key but the player will also need to  be aware where scoring zones are as the match progresses. Each skull is one point, score 25 skulls to win or deposit 10 skulls at once.

Stockpile

In Stockpile 2 teams fight over 4 neutral flags. The objective is to bring as many flags as possible to you own team’s designated territory and then repel the enemy while a timer runs down. If a flag is outside the team’s boundaries, even if it’s being carried by a player of the defending team it will not count.  The flags respawn every 60 seconds and there are 2 ways to win the match; Score 10 flags or score the most flags in 10 minutes.  This mode will require team work and communication to win, and lone wolf tactics won’t fair well.

Generator Defence

Generator defence is actually a Network Test. It is a 3 vs 3 game where one team are Elites and the other team are Spartans in a game style similar to Head Quarters in Modern Warfare 2. As Elites the objective is to destroy one of the 3 Generators guarded by the 3 Spartans. In order to prevent the generator’s destruction the Spartans will need to get in close and activate a temporary blast shield which will give the Spartans 30 seconds of breathing room.

In the beginning of each round players will get a choice of a large variety weapons as well as spawning locations.  To win the match the Elites need to destroy all 3 generators or the Spartans will need to prevent the destruction of all 3 generators.

As yet Generator Defence is not on the cards for the retail release of Halo Reach, but should it prove a hit with the beta testers it might make it into the final build.

Invasion

Invasion is a 6 vs 6, Spartan vs. Elite mode that  will be limited to Bone Yard Map in the beta, and will be similar in structure to Bad Company 2’s Rush mode. Elites are tasked with capturing different points on the map and by doing so larger portions of the map will be unlocked, along with loadouts.

Bungie is looking to once again work their magic in Halo Reach’s multiplayer. I for one am looking forward to May 3rd and the release of the Halo Reach Multiplayer Beta, and will be writing a full Hands-On impression.
