On launch day

Update: BT Games has cancelled its Xbox One midnight launch at all stores. According to a tweet from the company, this was done for “security reasons”.

As far as I saw, BT Games and Incredible Connection are the only retailers which will be holding a midnight launch.

Not only will you be among the first wave of gamers to pick up an Xbox One, you will also receive: a voucher booklet that entitles you to various discounts on hardware and software from BT Games; a R1,000 gift voucher for the first 10 Xbox One customers per store at Incredible Connection.

Incredible Connection will also discount everything in store by 10% (valid from midnight – 01:00 on 23 September).

The BT Games voucher book contains the following:

  1. R100 off: Far Cry 4 or The Crew or Assassin’s Creed Unity
  2. R100 off: Skylanders or Destiny or Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
  3. R100 off: Dead Rising 3 or Forza Horizon or Sunset Overdrive or Forza 5 or Ryse or Halo Master Chief Collection
  4. 2x R100 off: Wireless Controller or Wireless controller + Charge kit or Media Remote or Stereo Headset or Headset Adapter or Chat Headset
  5. R100 off: Rugby 15
  6. R100 off: XO headsets
  7. R100 off: Lords of the Fallen
  8. 2x R100 off: Dragon Age Inquisition or NHL 15 or Madden 15

The Nitty-gritty

Do not expect to get home, plug your Xbox One in, and just play. There will be a significant amount of updates needed before you can get going – fortunately a lot of the launch titles will be shipped with their updates included.

For example, Forza 5 will not require its 13GB day-one update.

The system itself will require updates, though, which should weigh in at around the 500MB mark. There is also new software in the works which will allow you to play media files from a USB device. DLNA support is also incoming, but might only release in October.
