Halo Reach leaked to BitTorrent

24 August 2010

A copy of Microsoft’s upcoming Halo: Reach has been leaked to Torrent sites, and is currently being shared online by thousands of gamers.

It is thought that Microsoft was experimenting with a new means of providing reviewers with early review code. For this purpose, Halo: Reach was uploaded onto some hidden location on Xbox Live, after which some wily hackers managed to bypass the security measures and download it. It remains unclear exactly who tipped off the hackers, but the game has since been cracked, and is being freely shared via torrents.

Microsoft didn’t officially acknowledged the leak at first, saying “we are still investigating details surrounding a claimed leak of Halo: Reach and have nothing further to share.”

They have since begun “aggressively” looking into the matter, and at least one user playing the leaked version has reported being banned permanently from Xbox Live.

Halo: Reach is due out on September 14.
