Unfortunately, we didn’t have much positive to say about the launch of Xbox Live in SA the day before its long awaited launch.
Long story short; we finally have our own dedicated Xbox Live service in SA, which means we don’t have to use EU/US accounts to go online. This means we can buy MSPoints directly over Live with local credit cards. It also means that our region is no longer IP banned.
However, local Xbox Live subscriptions and MS Points are significantly more expensive than their UK/US equivalents.
Hours after the service went live, reports started emerging that UK MS Points and subscriptions were working on local Xbox Live accounts. We setup a local test account, and were able to redeem UK MSPoints without any issues.
XboxGaming.co.za found that most UK subscriptions and MS Points work on the local service, with the exception being 4200 MS Points cards. This is thought to be because there are currently no 4200 MS Point denominations on SA Xbox Live.
2100 SA MS Points will cost you R299. The same amount of points for UK Live can be bought for R215 locally at MSPoints.co.za
This means that anyone with the relevant knowledge will be unlikely to buy MS Points locally, posing questions regarding the viability of the service at all.
In other Local Xbox Live news, early adopters found that the local Xbox Live Marketplace was missing a lot of content. According to Xbox SA’s Yvette van Rooyen, they are in the process of populating our marketplace, so hang in there.
