Cheaters force XBLA Sonic 4 leaderboard reset

Now, I don’t cheat at games. Cheating is for people who suck at games and Counter-Strike players. But – hypothetically speaking, of course – if I were to cheat at a game, I’d be subtle about it.

For starters, I probably wouldn’t post a speed-run time of 0’00”00 for any Sonic the Hedgehog 4 stage. Proving, perhaps, that cheaters not only suck at games but also at risk management, subterfuge, or even just thinking clearly, however, that’s exactly what two Xbox players have done. Way to go, guys – according to Eurogamer, SEGA’s now wiped the entire leaderboard because of you.

Which seems not only somewhat excessive – why not simply remove the offending scores? – but also completely pointless. Until the exploit is fixed (and nothing has yet been announced to that effect), those cheaters can keep reposting their hacked scores. In the meantime, anybody who’s been working towards the Contender Achievement will have to start over. Or hold off until the game’s fixed. Boo.
