Microsoft working to improve Kinect accuracy

20 December 2010

According to a report over on Eurogamer, Microsoft is working to improve Kinect’s motion-tracking accuracy – enough even that the device’s camera could detect individual finger movements.

This would be made possible through a firmware upgrade, pushing Kinect’s depth sensor from its current 320 x 240 resolution limit up to 640 x 480. The resolution capability is apparently restricted by the USB controller interface’s data bandwidth, which is capable of pushing 35 MB per second, but uses only 15 or 16 MB.

Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter explains that such an upgrade is “eminently doable”, adding that “The resolution coming out of the depth camera via PC is indeed 640×480, but it is uncertain just how accurate the camera’s sensor is. Additionally, processing four times as many depth pixels could slow things down more.”

Next up, Activision announces Finger Paint Hero.
