Apparently yesterday’s mandatory dashboard update – supposedly a minor feature fix from the last dashboard rollout – was packing a secret payload.
According to the guys over on the Xbox Scene forums, pirated copies of a bunch of games including Call of Duty: Black Ops, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Halo: Reach are no longer working. It appears, however, that some games are entirely unaffected, and that Microsoft is simply focussing on the most popular Xbox LIVE multiplayer titles.
It’s not likely to keep pirates at bay for very long, as the modding scene tends to mobilise and update its own firmware pretty quickly in response to new anti-piracy lockouts, but it’s perhaps just a bit of corporate posturing. Recent reports of Modern Warfare 2 hacking on PS3 has prompted a response from developer Infinity Ward that Sony is responsible for resolving system-level issues. This might be Microsoft saying, “We can fix it, lol.”
