There’s some dirty rumour-mongering afoot. However, the prospect should it prove true is tantalising. At this stage, there are no official announcements, and no reliable sources.
It all begins with the supposed signing of a deal between Microsoft and Jenkins Software, the developers of the RakNet Technology. RakNet was the same tech employed by Sony last year which will, among other things, allow it to begin integrating Steamworks technology into the PSN.
A deal between Microsoft and Jenkins Software would supposedly bring a number of networking technology upgrades to Xbox LIVE, and the possibility of Steamworks integration.
Some of the touted features:
• Lobby and room matchmaking
• Network address traversal connectivit
• Use of Steam servers for forwarding traffic
Now, I personally believe that, if all this is true, Microsoft would stop short of a full Steam store service on Xbox LIVE. It would be absolute madness for them to allow another digital distribution platform to cannibalise sales from the LIVE Marketplace.
