Another PC Build - :)

Hi all,

It's been a long time since I "built" a PC. Was using laptops for the last decade. Anyway, I want to build a nice gaming rig that can handle most games on high to ultra. Also would like to do some streaming(Twitch). Hence the i7. But I'm not sure if its needed. What do you think?

This is the build. Going the RebelTech route. R15300.00 all in.

TIA

Joker,

I tried this build you suggested below on the other thread. It comes in at R17300. My budget is R15k. Is there any changes I can make to get it around there and still be an OK build? Thanks.

Intel Core i5 4690K
MSI Z97 GAMING 3
Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB Kit DDR3-2400 CL11 1.65v
MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4GB 256bit
Corsair RM 550w 80 PLUS Gold Modular
Crucial MX100 256G SATA6G
Corsair Vengeance C70 Windowed Artic White
ASUS DVD Writer 24x

BTW - The MSI GTX 970 is out of stock at the moment on Rebel Tech's website.

Memory looks wrong to me....pretty sure that CPU can do way faster than 1600.

I'd also go for a micro USB wifi dongle instead of that card thingie.

Personally I'd also drop the DVD drive entirely, but thats personal preference

Are you sure you can't put a ethernet cable in though?

Not a big fan of wifi for gaming boxes...the link breaks occasionally.

Can try to. Just applied for 40Mbs VDSL(in my area apparently) so I'm getting a new router. Will see if I can put a LAN cable through the ceiling.

Noob question: Regarding the speed of RAM, if the MB says DDR3 1600, is that the maximum speed RAM you can fit in it? So if I bought faster RAM, then I will need to buy a motherboard that can support that speeds?

Yes. The mem will clock down if the board can't support higher afaik...which would be a waste. Though sticking fast ram in there will give you a minor overclocking edge...not worth factoring that in though imo.

You just need to align the cpu mobo and ram in terms of max ability...else you're paying for something you can't use [*]. Dunno about the mobo, but the mem just seems out of place. e.g. I bought a PC 2 years ago and that was already running at 1866.

[*] Boards can actually run the CPU and mem at different speeds. On older boards a difference between them created a ~5-7% performance hit. Seems to be less than after they dumped the FSB model.

Yeah for VDSL I'd def go for cable. Under specific circumstances the wifi could actually bottleneck you on 40mbps.

Will have a look at it again.
As for the ram, the board supports DDRIII 3300.

I'm having no issues with WiFi. I wasn't able to put an ethernet cable in, as my router is on the other side of the open plan area - around 10m away. J-man set me up with a nice Asus WiFi card in my mini monster and I have no issues with latency or stability...

I'm a no-clutter freak, so I try to go wireless as far as I can. :D

Had nothing but bad look...with 2 entirely separate installations.

One drops every ~2 hours (N wireless). Other one was capped to 2.5mBpbs throughput depending on what devices were connected (g/b wireless).

I'm sure it can work flawlessly...but my 0/2 trackrecord makes me trust in ethernet. :D

There's no denying ethernet is the ideal solution, it might not always be possible/feasible.

I'd like to wire my house with ethernet sometime, as each room already has an outlet with a pipe to the roof. I just need to span cables from my fibre router beside the garage to each of the rooms. The fibre router has what looks like 16 ports with only 1 being used currently (connected to my WiFi router).

Even with Netflix running on the Smart TV (connected wirelessly) and downloads running on either laptop or gaming PC, my online gaming is buttery smooth with low latency.
