I spent 16 years in an IT support role. CHanged companies many times thinking it is the companies making me sad and depressed. Turns out it is the type of work. In the end I was just project managing and tried to keep up technically, but with no varsity degree and nobody willing to risk me in any form of proper management role, I called it quits.

I am now (and have been for the last 3 years) in construction as a project manager. I get to spend time outdoors. I see projects with clear end dates and actually have something tangible to show off. I love it!

Also: boere tan FTW!

you see, this is what i am talking about!! i cannot help shake the feeling that my TRUE calling is somewhere else. I'm stuck in the banking sector, but i honestly HATE the sickening jargon. bankers are self-righteous twunts who think they are better than everyone. This is based solely on their ability to speak in unintelligible jargon, waffling on about "Partial Differential Hedges on the zero coupon curves resulting in distortion on the PnL on the PV01 Cash Gap, due to the application of discount factors when calculating the antithetic VAR effect"

But how does one break into a totally new career stream?? I guess I have to study part time ?

From this, it would sound like you are in construction and able to make a deadline????? IMPOSSIBRU!!!!!!

Hahaha! You just need the right project managers ;)

But how does one break into a totally new career stream??

It was one of the most frightening decisions in my life. Still don't earn what I used to, but will do one day soon. Also, it helps that I knew the owner before the move.

Hahaha , i remember a few years back PWC came to do an audit on the consignment stock we had in the warehouse and the guy wanted to count it using derivatives he kept getting the wrong tele, after telling and showing him for the upteenth time how to do it he eventually followed my suite

I'm like that, I like to have some "done" relatively short after deciding to do it, or within the time set.
Like I said, my previous boss....sheesh. For example, our company offered our old PCs to a blind school who had theirs stolen. I reinstalled several PCs, about 12 or so. (in the end, we had about 22 PCs done) In turn the project stood for about a year, if not slightly longer.
I questioned several times, but always this or that excuse.
Eventually it was done, luckily for the kids just before I left, becuase honestly, not sure if it would have been done had it been up to my ex boss.

Now, we have several projects, we have dates it needs to be done, and its mostly kept to with a day or two. Feels very nice to get something done. The other day I left after everyone had left the office, was dark and quiet, but felt that satisfying feeling when I left the building I havent felt for quite a few years.

Obviously its not always rosy, you get your days when you want to strangle an uptight manager or throw a laptop into orbit or play your salary in lotto tickets. But its ok for now, with room to grow and learn.

I'd say I'm quite happy in my job. I do software development for our own company, I work from home and since we're developing HR software, there is so much scope, that I never get bored. If I get really busy (like at the moment), then I switch my day and night around and work through the night as I'm more productive that way.
Only thing is the stress sometimes. Stress to meet customer deadlines, have money for salaries, VAT, etc.

Salary wise is enough. Probably not market related, but wouldn't move even if I was offered twice what I'm getting now. Ok, granted, I can't really move even if I wanted because I'm too deeply invested, but wouldn't want to if I could.
Work as something where I exchange my time for money and seeing that it makes up half of my day, it is very important to me that I love my work.

Recently heard I'm being relocated to another country.

Equal parts excited and terrified. :D

Now I just need to figure out how much Chutney/Biltong/SA climate I need to pack into my hand luggage. :o

Woah what country are you being shipped off to?
Europe - would prefer not to say more as my profile is already a little thin anonymity wise. Still...if anyone of the regulars here are interested I'll PM.

Actually applied for an overseas assignment so its not entirely out of the blue. :D Got a little blind-sided by the raw speed though...two weeks from idea to sign on the dotted line. Faster than getting an ADSL line installed.

Dude that's awesome! I knew you were looking into moving, but didn't expect it so soon. I really am glad for you though - sounds like a grand adventure.

On a similar note, we decided today to possibly register our newly formed company in New Zealand. We were approached by a potential parner who recently did the same, so now we're doing a bit of a feasibility study to see if it makes sense.

@ViperGTI: I know exactly what position you're in. I was in the HR software game for nigh on 10 years. I know what it's like to be deeply vested, I wrote about 80% of the product's code-base and was promised shares, directorship, holidays, blah blah blah. None of it realised in nearly a decade. A DECADE. Breaking away to do my own thing this year has been the best thing ever.

Dude, that is awesome. Best of luck and enjoy the lightning fast interwebs

awesome news dude! all the best with the new setup.

I work in a large distribution and warehousing company that handles most commong things that one could find in an average house.
I have been here for 7 months and overall have come to love my job here. I have already been on 2 training courses so that they can add more responsibilities to my job description.
I did get a very high mark with my appraisal for the Christmas bonus so I will be using that and the courses done come next year June when the raises are due as my work load is far more than when I started working here.
Lots more to learn here and because of the size of the company there is lots of space to grow even if it is not in Cape Town (only positions above me here is warehouse supervisor and DC manager).

Simon, when you feel ready to move (and if i'm still employed where I am currently) let me know. I work for the 15th largest 4PL logistics firm in the world and I have some good hooks into the business end (I'm in the IT end)

Well I work in the receiving department, not IT versified enough to go that route. Thanks though :)

I like my work even though I work harder that I used to before.

My previous company I worked for, I swear the MD was a relative of some nazi concentration camp commander, used to throw a german fit whenever he felt like it. My boss was a lazy useless old man who either sat on facebook or coin collection sites the whole day, only stopping to moan over the phone how busy he is and telling me to go fix whatnot. Work four sites in 2 in Selby and 2 in Vereeniging.
My boss got sick was in hospital for 4 months, I ran all four sites (about 40 PCs per site) alone. Wasnt even thanked, meantime, managers get performance bonuses and incentives.
I even redid the networking in one site.

Earlier this a friend contacted me on Skype, asked me I still wanted another job, said yes, went for two interviews, thought nothing of it and was offered a position with better pay, better people and much more toys to play with. I worked for here for six months, and got a raise...wth?

Awesome to hear the guys where I used to work phone and complain about the, direct quote, "tool" they have employed there now.

weird how things change sometimes...I am just once again reminded how nothing really stays the same, how people change, esp when it get to money and power. How its influences ppl in their behavior and also how a company can tell you verbally you'll be earning much more when they will employ you permanently (coming from a contract position), but when the perm contract signing comes, you get less than what you earned before and you get told "We could have let you go at any time." Basically, sign the contract or fuck off, you are easily replaceable oh and since we have let go of other people, here are double more work for you to even though its not nearly related to you.
Coming to work now is a great very depressing effort...
