Mechanical keyboard buying help...

Hello forumers .

It's been a while.
I am in search of a new keyboard. Ice decided to go mechanical and put a budget of R1000. I have a few keyboards I like but the one I was initially going for (steelseries 6gv2) is out of stock on kzn. I am willing to post from johannesburg and if necessary Cape Town.

I have never used mechanical but from my style of typing and use I think it's between black/ red or brown. I don't think I will enjoy the noise of the clicking from Blue.

Keyboards :

Steelseries 6gv2
Cooler Master cm quickfire pro (black, red or brown available)
Cm quickfire xt (red/ brown)

Those are the 3 I know of close to R1000.

I would like media keys or functions for media and I like full anti ghosting. Also full mechanical. Corsair k60 is out because it ain't full.

Hope you can help. Also give your experiences if you've owned a board you think is great and your reason for your preferred key.

Thanks

Mechanical keyboards have been around for what 30+ years.

Your post is the first i hear of this red/black/brown/blue classification story...

Sounds like you really bought into the marketing of some company there...CM I'm guessing?

lol Well the keys are very different.
I personally prefer brown keys.

For anyone interested, give this a read.

The different switches are perfectly explained.

Back to the OP's question:

I would say save a little longer and try and get a backlit board.
My choice would be one of the following:

Hello. Thanks for the advice. I'm stuck between brown and reds. I think blacks will be a little too stiff. I was either looking at a logitech g710 plus or cooler Master pro (this has some back-lit keys). The 701+ is full back-lit and has macros can get it for about R1335.

I have the G710+ and it is an awesome keyboard. If you're fine with only 1 backlight colour (white) then it should be what you're looking for. It has Red switches if I remember correctly, multimedia keys and macro keys.
Also, it's pretty :)

I primarily use red switches for gaming and browns for typing. So i would suggest if you're going to focus more on typing you should rather get the browns. Otherwise if you are going to mostly game on the keyboard, then go with the reds.

I will mostly game. I type when I search the Web and make comments and usually type in word. I usually play fps and open world and lots of league of Legends which is similar to mmo.

It's between a cooler Master quick fire ultimate red which I can now import through a friend for about R1100 or a logitech for about R1335.

I wouldn't recommend importing, mech boards can and do die, so warranty will be a pain in the ass.

Also if you're looking for the happy medium, you should look at getting brown switches.

+1 Extremely happy with the brown switches in my keyboard.

I have found purple fly trading quite good for keyboards and they have the corsair k70 for R1400 but it's red switches. I'm stuck between that or the logitech g710+. Let me know.

It's now between corsair k70 full mechanical and logitech g710+. I don't need macro keys as I may not find use for them. I also would like a mechanical keyboard that feels worth the R1400.

Thanks I'm going to get the logitech g710+. If you have any other recommendations with cherry mx brown please post.

K70 by a country mile.
Why are you shopping from these unknown shops? xD lol

Just buy from somewhere that is well known and been in the business for ages, it'll help with warranty claims ect.

Also a good board:

I thought the whole point of mechanical keyboards was the fact that they DON'T die...its the plastic membranes on normal keyboards which perish long before mechanical keyboards even start getting comfortably worn-in :P

Nope I've owned and rma'd a few mech boards.
Its generally not the keys, mostly backlighting failing.

I have however had to rma 2x mechboards for key failure.
