I did the same thing Friday past. My phone was so slow it became unbearable; with CM installed it so much faster but it takes some getting used to.
I struggled quite some time to replace my stock recovery software with clockwork, my phone kept on reverting back to the stock recovery.

I'm a bit worried about my home and lightning protection. I installed a fireplace recently and the steel chimney extents about 1.5m above the highest point of the roof. I have no idea what would happen if lightning struck that chimney. I can only think it would run down straight into my lounge...

Hmmm... this is interesting. Never heard of this and now looking into it.

How will affect all my synced Google stuffs? (if at all)

I was getting stuck in a boot loop when I was trying to install CM11 (although I think I might have been impatient on some of my tries), I flashed TWRP over CWM and then wiped the system partition, cache and dalvic cache, so I was installing it fresh rather than over the stock ROM, and then it worked.

TWRP seems nicer than CWM, I didn't have trouble loading either recovery though, I flashed CWM using Rom Manager, and TWRP using TWRP Manager.

TWRP also made me install the Stericson BusyBox

You sign in to your Google account when you first boot and it syncs it all back

PS: You need to get the GApps (Google Apps) zip as well as the ROM zip to load up all the Google Apps.

I'm digging it, aside from a fresh new look, and better performance, I'm now running 4.4.4 KitKat instead of 4.1.2 JellyBean, and I have more storage space because I don't have the Samsung bloatware, and I can now move apps to the SD card as well :)

PPS: You can back up all your apps, and their data using Titanium Backup, then once you have the custom ROM installed, you can restore all your apps and data, but Google Play asked if it should reload all my apps, so I didn't even need to restore my backups. All I've lost is my sms's, but I'm not worried about those.

I used ODIN to install Clockwork. Then Clockwork to install CM11 (Snapshot 12).
My problem was that, after ODIN installed Clockwork, my phone would restart en boot into the Stock OS again, and this would wipe Clockwork and install the stock recovery. So I just had to boot into recovery before my phone restarted, and it was all fine. From there installing CM and also installing Gapps was simple, and took me all of 2 minutes.

I also had to wipe factory settings and whatever, and I cleared both my cache and delvik cache. It did not allow my to install CM before I did those things. The installation just failed.

Make sure you sync everything with Google before you do this. After installing it will redownload your apps and sync your contacts again.
To just be safe I made a backup of my phone on my PC as well. In the end only my contacts and apps had to be redownloaded. It didn't wipe my photos, music, etc.

If push comes to shove, is it easy to go back to Andriod (KitKat for aguments sake?) i.e. the previous state?

Not 100% sure, but as far as I know you can download the stock OS .md5 file again, but don't quote me on that. I just know I misread one page during my Google escapades and accidentally downloaded the stock ROM for my Galaxy S3.
This is the first time I have ever put a custom ROM on my phone, so I had to Google something fierce before I did it. I suggest you do the same Beo; or get someone with more experience doing this to comment :)

Don't know if it is worth it, but if this discussion is going to continue, we should perhaps create a separate thread for it.

Once you have a custom recovery loaded, either ClockworkMod or TWRP, you can make a backup image of your current install to the SD card, then if all else fails, you just recover the backup, and you're back where you started. I did this a good few times while I was trying to get it right, and recovery using CWM and TWRP both worked perfectly. It does take maybe half an hour to do though.

If you do this, you should know that you will void your warranty, and there is a (very small) chance that you might brick the phone, but from what I've read, it's very safe these days, and even if it does get bricked, you can maybe even still unbrick it by flashing the stock ROM with Odin.

It might be worth a thread hey....

For what it's worth, I have an S3 mini, which isn't officially supported, but I got it from Novafusion here http://novafusion.pl/2014/11/27/release-cyanogenmod-11-0-s3-mini-263/

Otherwise check out http://www.cyanogenmod.org/, and for anything Androidy, check http://www.xda-developers.com/ and there forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/

Cyanogenmod, from what I have read is not the most flashy of custom ROMs, but is the most popular, well supported, and stable, and the best choice for a first time.

Why does a director/manager/baas always thinks his the most important. I'm so sick of this "push them" or "tell them its urgent" to get things done when put of the last moment or when they decide to do something or want something.

Are they really so dim-witted of self-important that they think everything will be set aside for them when they need a Cell, car, etc etc...
even with them being 100 times more important than me, there is still a million other companies with their own dirs/mans etc.
