The gentleman's decision between the PS4 and XBone?

Hey friends,

So since I don't have a gaming rig or even laptop to play my usual PC games and evergrowing steam collection, I figured I'll just get a console to use on weekends when Im actually home.

Now I own an Xbox360 and PS3 back in SA so I'm not brand biased...and loved both even though I got severely irritated by the PS3 controller's trigger buttons that made my fingers slide off them the whole time. The Xbox controller was way more comfortable.

Right now it seems as though the XBone controller's gone back to the shape of the original Xbox (which I also own and loathe the fat controller) while the PS4 seems to be getting their shit together with the controller layout.

Yes I know, buy the console according to exclusives that you love. Well I'll admit I'm a forza fan, but Dirt has always been my preferred racer...and as long as the witcher 3 comes out on PS4 that's cool too.

I've been told spec wise that the PS4 is a better GAMING console whereas the Xbone is the preferred all in one multimedia machine. Thing is, I have a 35-35Mbps fiber line and cable set top box for TV channels and a Sammy 48" smart TV which I connect to my phone for streaming youtube and whatnot...again, sorry if this sounds boastful and showy offy, that's not my intent. But Im painting the picture of the entertainment layout. I dont have a PC to connect to Windows Media Centre, so the console will be standalone. I dont need to stream netflix or anything. I do that directly from my TV.

How does PSN compare to XBL? I've never used PSN before but XBL with gold was ok, but I see they were hacked this week.

Which would you guys recommend, given that my main love is racing games and questing. I don't care much for FPS or strat games on console.

It would be interesting to see your replies as well as your reasoning for it.

EDIT: It might be worth noting that I don't have any of my consoles with me anymore. I left everything in SA, hence starting afresh...also, Mass Effect and Fable and Forza were the only exclusives I ever really worried about, but lost my love for Fable and I see ME3 was also out on PS3...so where does this leave us on the exclusives battle?

Fortunately for you I own both consoles, and seems I have become somewhat of the MyG test bunny :P

Check this XBO vs PS4 thread, I have posted quite a bit already. And I'm surprised the thread stayed mostly on track without any flaming.

my honest opinion, as a long time XBox fan, I say get the PS4. unless you want a media center

Thanks, reading now! I'll probably end up getting both too. Who knows...but right now it seems like most of the people I know in my new town (both of them) have PS4s instead of Xbones.

Surprisingly I'm also leaning towards the PS4...which is odd, because I hardly ever fired up my PS3 at home aside from playing exclusives like LBP and Heavy Rain. The latest XBox360 portal felt a bit too cartooney and Wii like for me. I think Kinect put me off a lot of it.

I think the biggest thing is, don't let stats and what not avert your decision. Get the platform you want based on it's exclusives. Let that be your deciding factor.

Controller, GUI and multitasking is awesome on the XBO.

PS4 is awesome for their PSN specials and free games, and Bloodborne! ^_^

To be honest, I really can't fault either and love and play them both equally.

What's this nonsense? True gentlemen only game on PC.

If I had a PC or could afford to buy a brand new rig here in Norway I would do just that.

Anyway, I buckled this evening and got myself the PS4 + Last of us, DA Inquisition and some crappy racing game.

I was surprised that it still accepted my old PS3 PSN account. Are there any specials I should know of or codes for free games etc? Im busy pulling War Thunder as we speak.

Cool man, can't go wrong with TLoU:Remastered, and what crappy racing game?
Hit me up on PSN

Driveclub. Is it ok? It was the only thing resembling driving they had in the shop so I thought oh well.

I lot of controversy behind its release. But they've JUST released their dynamic weather update and oh man.

THIS GAME IS FUCKING INSANELY BEAUTIFUL!!!

And an exclusive!

Oh right. i'll give it a go. I figured it was lame because I saw a pic of it on the PS box AFTER buying the console and thought it might've been bundled or free on DLC or something...which implies its lame. Also it looked a bit silly like midnight racer on xbox was or something.

The choice between the eggsbox1 and ps4 is fairly easy:

xbone: If you you want a multimedia machine that can play games.
PS4: If you want a machine for gaming, and not worry about multimedia as much

Yeah I eventually went for the PS4 last night. I already have a SetTopBox and Smart Tv for multimedia (and no PC to connect it to, so it's as is.)

I played a bit of drive club last night and I must admit, it wasn't exactly terrible.

The lighting in the game is astounding. Hands down best in ANY game!

Go for complete immersion, turn off hud, use cockpit cam, and go on a track with time multiplied by 60 therefor 24min = 24hours ingame. (use dynamic weather for increased difficulty)

Voicy - I think you made the right choice :P Driveclub is awesome and Last of us . . . Its just an amazing story the little I have seen of it. I want a PS4 just for that.

Cheers, keen to try it out. I see theres a 2.4GB patch for the game. I'll pull it while I make some coffee tonight. :P

Thanks tannie, yeah I must admit, the PS interface feels more ... grown up. I'm to try out LBP. I loved the 1st one and managed to finish it despite that godawful wheelofdeath at the end.

Which titles are worth looking out for? I'm told Dragon Age Inquisition is said to be the best gfx in any game so far. Iæll play it a bit this weekend as im a sucker for medieval RPGs, but im keen to give new games a go too. I got about 30% into GTA V on my xbox back home, but still a fun game to mess around in.

First Person Shooter = Far Cry 4 (I'm about ~20hours in)
Action RPG = Lords of The Fallen (it's Dark Souls esque and as I'm typing, mine just got delivered)
All Round Fun = GTA5 (really can't go wrong with any GTA title, and the redux just makes it better, though online seems to have died down)

Twin Stick Shooter = Geometry Wars 3 (this game is addictive and will murder your thumbsticks)

Can also try :

Survival/Suspense : Alien Isolation <-- Some say it's a bit drawn out, but I loved every bit.
Action/Adventure : Shadow of Mordor <-- Beo didn't like his it seems so buy it of him for cheap ;) Busy going for the Plat with this one.

And if you have not played The Last of Us yet, I can highly recommend that as well. Second Son was also fun for me, and quite an easy Plat if you are trophy hunting.

Games I disliked (personal opinion) : Watchdogs, Black Flag, NFS Rivals.
