damn, i'm certainly in the minority :( i love it when i can clock a game in under 6 hours. it means i get to experience MORE games.

No, you're not. Seems like my average game tenure is 8-9 hours according to Steam. There are exceptions, of course, but I either finish or drop a game after that threshold. Leaving a game unfinished bugs me tremendously, so I prefer something I can complete in 8-9 hours.

depends on genre, RPG's need to be long and epic 60 to 80 hours atleast.

shooters the current norm of 8 hours is a bit short but a good time frame. 10 to 12 would be my sweet spot.

I prefer long as i hate it when a game finishes too quickly, or a game where the main story is short but there are tons of side missions...

Shorter for me. Long games should feel like it's composed of multiple shorter sections, which GTA5 did nicely. A few big heists with small stuff inbetween. I also like books that are not part of long series', and I like my series to be around 10 episodes per season. And I like movies that stand alone, and are not part of a series :)

Depends on the game. It should be finished by about 20 hours though (more or less)

I've been putting off playing Fallout 3 because I know how much time I'll have to sink into it. Not that I don't want to, I've just got so much else to get to (and I'm not just talking about games)

I enjoy Longer games as long as they are not repetitive , I enjoy grinding to a point and then its instant boredom Its because of that fact I cant finish torchlight for instance.

I don't think an RPG's can be short... can it ?

Adventure style games are fun and usually short and I think that's part of the reason they are fun, the dopamine hit from achieving a goal is more often than in rpg's for me at least, the continues small achievements in a rpg don't feel like a win.

Why not a short game that is filled with enough side stuff to keep you busy for long?
Oblivion/skyrim - the main quest is roughly 20hours, but potentially you can play it forever (radiant quests).

Games that force themselves to be long is lame IMO.

I prefer longer titles, however the length should be quantifiable time spent either telling the back story, developing the character or really just taking the player on a journey of discovery. Some titles have become really too short in my opinion. I also don't enjoy padding story development and play time with cut scenes or QTE cut scenes. Tomb Raider (2nd and 3rd era) games got it right with respects to keeping the game long enough to develop the character and yet short enough to prevent you from getting bored.

I love long games. Mass Effect 2 with all DLC took about 40 hours if I remember correctly. Think that is kinda the sweet spot for me. Loved Fallout and Skyrim but I do not have the time available for those kinds of games anymore. Even Assassin's Creed 4 is seemingly taking forever.

I like my RPGs to be in the 90+ hour range, but I prefer my action/adventure titles to be sub 20 hours. When it comes to strategy titles 50 hours seem to be the sweet spot for me.

I prefer long games, yet not repetitive.

Instances of long games done right: Half-Life series, GTA series, FarCry 1, Tomb Raider (older releases), Guild Wars 1

Games are never repetitive, game keeps player entertained with storyline and/or changing gameplay.

Instances of short games, which could have been a bit longer: Crysis, every CoD and Battlefield singleplayer game, Tomb Raider (newest one).

Why?

Crysis was great, but a lot of wasted potential, like fights with aliens as opposed to regular humans. For first time I played the game, I was never so disappointed at such quick ending.

For CoD/Battlefield, story just plain short and/or uninteresting gameplay.

Tomb Raider's shortness gave sense of "one day venture" rather than "epic journey to prevent end of world".

Instances of overly long games: Diablo 2, World of Tanks.

In Diablo 2, campaign seems really repetitive, so I manage to drop it in middle of desert act or jungle act.

World of Tanks can be explained by one word: Grind.

In general, whenever I buy game short game, I feel myself ripped-off.

It depends. If you know how to use it a short one can feel just as-

Ohhh, wait...

It really depends on the game, in my opinion. If I'm buying something like Diablo, I expect it to be skirting the longer side because I know it's all about farming and replaying sections of the game. When it comes to story-driven games, it needs to hit the sweet spot between being too long and too short. Alien Isolation, as an example, dragged on for about 5 hours more than it probably should have. Tomb Raider, on the other hand, felt like just the right length.

Just like a good vacation, a story-driven game needs to end while you're still enjoying it. The moment tedium starts to set in the entire experience is soured.

I have posted before, but I do also agree with a lot of this as well. Don't own Diablo and do not yet own Alien Isolation, so I cannot agree or disagree.

The latest Tomb Raider was just right in length in my opinion. No pointless running around, everything just seemed to gel well. Although it was short it did not feel like it needed any additional content to make it any longer.
