Galax Graphics Cards...My thoughts

So Galax gpu's are now becoming available in SA through Rebeltech, I recently got my hands on the Galax GTX980 SOC Edition and started messing around with it.

The SOC cards are generally slightly less expensive than their hof counter parts, in this case there is a R1000 difference between the 2 cards, so I wanted to see if I could match and beat the HOF. As it turned out it wasn't all that hard beating the HOF card, took about 20min to OC and get to the absolute top clocks on this particular card.

The card ended topping out on the following:

Core Boost Clock @1506
Mem Clock @2003

With the fan running at 100% (Incredibly quiet even at full tilt) I was able to do countless 3D mark runs without any artifacting or crashes ect, easily beating the HOF card. That said Bench clocks generally aren't stable for gaming and as each game is different I had to drop down to get the happy medium.

Gamging clocks came in at the following:

Core Boost Clock @1479
Mem Clock @1953

For those not sure what these numbers mean, the cards stock clocks are:

Core Boost Clock @1329
Mem Clock @1753

All in all a pretty massive improvement in gaming performance.

From playing with this card and from going through 100's of HOF benchmarks I did find that the HOFcards generally ran around 5c cooler than the SOC.

So is the HOF worth the R1000 extra...

Well if you want a white card you're kind of stuck as its the only 980 that comes in white so in that case you would have to fork out the extra cash, I also think the HOF looks slightly better then the SOC. The cooler shroud looks better and the fans are slightly larger giving the card a more agro look while offering slightly better cooling performance.

Performance wise, I couldn't tell the difference, both cards will clock to around 1500 on air, they'll both run with the elite brands (Asus, Gigabyte, Msi) without a problem and in most cases offer better overclocking than the elite cards.

The HOF does come with slightly higher out of the box clocks, so if you aren't looking at overclocking then yeah the HOF does give you that slight edge.

Both cards come with backplates and both cards come with the same 2 year warranty.

So I personally wouldn't spend the extra, I am not to bothered with the looks of the cards as the SOC still looks great. I only really care about performance.

At the end of the day though, the Galax cards are sure to shake up the local gpu scene with their insane performance for very little money compared to the likes of Asus, Gigabyte and MSI.

Rebeltech is expecting stock of the HOF card at the end of the month and still have a couple of SOC cards in stock.

Also just would like to add, GALAX is basically a amalgamation of KFA2 and Galaxy. Galaxy produced many OEM cards for both AMD and Nvidia for over a decade, so you are getting quality stuff.

Yeah this is true, they are now focused on Nvidia only and these cards are tier 1 for sure.

I am so far extremely happy with my Galax 970 Black Edition, it even boosts to 1367Mhz right of the box. :D

Will try get my hands on one and see how hard and far I can push the 970 cards. ;)

I'll leave that to you, I'll stick with the default overclock. :p

Guru3d did a review of this very card, and also overclocked it.

They ended up with the following at a fixed 70% fan speed:

Boost clock @ 1406
Mem clock @ 1951 (7806)

Stock clocks for this card is
Boost @ 1317
Mem @ 1750 (7000)
At 1080p, it results in a 4 -10 FPS boost in the titles they tested.

I haven't tried overclocking my card yet, mostly because the card is quite fast enough at the moment.

Does your's boost to the value they indicate (1317)? For some reason mine boosts to 1367.

Boosting may vary depending on the temps and fan speed bud.
That's why I've never been a fan of boost clocks, as your not always quite sure.

@Blazzok

Yeah Guru generally do a good job but I push a lot harder than they do, so really want to see what the 970's can do at their max clock on air.

Well as long as it's consistent which it is then I have no complaints. I understand that if the card gets too hot then the boost speed will be throttled down, my card rarely goes over 60c so it never gets throttled lower than 1367Mhz.

@Isen
I haven't really looked the boost clock while gaming, so I'll have a look and post it.

@Joker
Cool, would like to see what you can do with them :)

I'm also looking at the Galax 970 which Wootware currently has for R4899 and replacing my 2 R9 270's how would that preform with a FX8350 and 8Gb of Gskill 1866 ram Joker on an MSI 970 Board the v2.0?

That's one of the faster AMD CPU's, the 970 should pair up quite nicely.

As long as you're playing at 1080P or higher it'll be perfectly fine bud.

Rebeltech is getting stock of the GTX970 Exoc in the next 8-10 days.

It should run just great. You'd get a 15-20% increase in performance (on average) I would guess, looking at how those cards perform in XFire. Also, if you sell your 2 R9's, you will be able to cover most of the cost of the 970.

Gotta say this card is incredible.
The silence + the performance is just unbeatable...AMD will have to do something really special to get close to this.

Is it AMD or is it the Card manufacturer and does Galax only do nvidia? Cos i'm looking at 2 option Joker the AMD fx 8350 chip with the 970 or the Intel Core i5 4590 CPU with the 970

Thing is the board that they want to supply me with i can't seem to find on MSi's site :(
