The \m/etal Thread

So, I couldn't find one through Tapatalk and felt the best community around need a thread dedicated to the best music genre.

Feel free to discuss bands, songs, albums, sub-genres and philosophies - as long as it's METAL!

I'll start: I never make it a secret that I'm a huge prog metal fan and melodic prog often tickles my likey-likey bone. Some of my all-time favourites include Circus Maximus, Anubis Gate, Suspyre, Darkwater, Affector and, to a lesser extent, early Dream Theater.

My recent favourite band is Teramaze, their 2014 album "Esoteric Symbolism" is just gobsmackingly good. They have a perfect mix of prog, melodic and thrash metal.

TL;DR: \m/ TERAMAZE \m/

Woah, I'm subbing to this thread!

My favourite band(s) of all time; MEGADETH

I really dig hard heavy metal, though not too much of a fan of things like Slayer and Slipknot. Instead give me Children of Bodem and In Flames. I even go as far back as Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) and as Farlig said, Dream Theater. I feel some of the greatest music though has all come, and stemmed from the 80's. But nowadays what they class to be rock is a fucking farce and I was actually discussing this with a mate at work today.

Dude, do yourself a favour and check out Teramaze. They're sound is firmly rooted in late 80s / early 90s thrash, but add an impressive layer of prog with addictive hooks in just about every song. Ease into their sound with the album "Anhedonia" if you're not used to melodic prog.

I find myself straying away from commercial metal bands and prefer the indie / underground scenes. Just don't give me metalcore. Ever.

I also love me some progressive death metal, but find I've grown bored with most extreme metal bands. I used to listen to black and death exclusively, but I think my tastes matured somewhat. In Vain is an exception though - their last album "Aenigma" is nigh on perfect progressive death, or "avante garde" as they prefer to be labelled.

See, don't get me talking about metal. I won't stop!

Great thread.

Favourite metal bands are:

All Shall Perish
Fallujah
The Black Dahlia Murder
Job For A Cowboy
Despised Icon
Slipknot

Just to name a few. Been a metal musician for 7 years now as well and it's definitely my favourite genre to perform as well.

Yeah, people in the office know they musn't approach me if they hear metal playing, they know I'm then in a kwaai mood. I find it actually relaxes me though everyone tells me I'm playing aggressive/hostile music. That's when I just tell them to fuck off!

I enjoy a lot of different genres of music, but metal will always be number one. Not really against any particular sub-genre, I'll listen to anything if it sounds good to me (yes, even metalcore).

Favourite bands include:
Carcass
Soul Embraced
Insomnium
The Wake
As I Lay Dying
The Devil Wears Prada
Amon Amarth
Slipknot
Agalloch
Callenish Circle
Agathodaimon
and many more.

I've also been playing guitar for a couple of years now and am currently doing a small metal project with a friend of mine.

Ducky and Wlad, you must share some recordings on here! It'd be great to hear what you guys are up to...

@Beo: I know what you mean regarding the calming factor. When I'm at my most stressed, I find that metal keeps me calm and focussed. Must be the "devil's note" that soothes the soul. :p

Well I'm currently in two metal bands. MESMER and BETRAY THE EMISSARY.

Mesmer just released the first track a month ago. You can find it here - LINK

As for Betray The Emissary - they're an old Cape Town band that I joined last year. We just released two new tracks and are releasing a third from the new album on Monday. You can find them here - LINK - if you look on the right side you'll see the EP as well as the other new song we released last year.

I've also done a few drum covers over the years. My favourite is this one:

Our project is called Soul's Darkness and we only have 2 songs (so far). I've recorded a few more but I'm still waiting for my friend to add bass and vocals etc. I've posted them in the musicians thread here on the forum, but you can check us out on soundcloud as well: soundcloud.com/souls-darkness

Yeah, I mentioned it in the Dark Souls thread. We're both big fans of the Souls series so that's where the name comes from. One of our songs (Enter the Light) is about Demon's Souls. We'll probably still do one about Dark Souls as well. Basically we're not trying to be a serious band (main goal is to have fun) so all the lyrics we write will be about a game that we really like.

One of my devs used to be in a power metal band who had a song about DOTA. :D They disbanded right after they opened for Blind Guardian. Lifetime achievement, I suppose? Since then he and his bro started a blues rock band, which also disbanded due to his bro leaving the country. Now he's in a metal cover band.

Hey guys!

So my band, Betray The Emissary, has just released a new single! You can find the link to the new song here - FRAILTIES

Thanks for checking it out!

I grew tired of Amon Amarth and Sabbaton within a week of listening to them. Still enjoy Powerwolf though. You seem to like folky/war metal. :p

I'm not the biggest metal fan, but I do like some Prog (of any kind really). A couple that I haven't seen mentioned here that are worth it:

Mastodon
Opeth
Dream Theater

Any other Prog-metal fans?
