The \m/etal Thread

So my friend who does the vocals and bass for Soul's Darkness has just finished recording his band's debut album. Their band is called Dreams of Nightmare and the album title is Black Winter. All the recording, mixing, mastering etc. was done by my friend at home. They have made it available for download free of charge on bandcamp. Check it out and leave them a like on facebook if you dig it. Just click on "buy now" on bandcamp and select $0.00 to begin the download (you can also buy it for money, if you choose).

Here's the link: http://dreamsofnightmares.bandcamp.c...m/black-winter

Sheesh, I really dig it! Its quite groovy and vocals and guitar are super good. A lot more could be done with the songs drumming wise but they hold the songs up decent enough.

How is the metal scene in Bloem? I imagine the metal bands and fans must get a lot of flak from the general public?

The metal scene here as died down a little bit over the past few years, but it is definitely making a comeback. There used to be quite a few decent bands that played regular shows here, but one of the main venues where they used to play closed down and a lot of the bands split-up etc. We actually had a small little metal event this past weekend and two other SA bands (Bile of Man and Bloodbeast) came down to play as well. The venue they got wasn't the biggest, but the support was great. That place was packed. The biggest problem the scene faces here IMO is definitely a decent venue that can be used for regular shows.

I decided to dig up my old thread. Let's discuss the best music genre out there a bit.

As you guys know I'm a HUGE prog metal fan. The more atmospheric the better. Due to the limitation of the forum of posting only 2 videos per post, I'll spam this thread a bit today with videos of some of my favourite songs of recent years:

So, I couldn't find one through Tapatalk and felt the best community around need a thread dedicated to the best music genre.

Feel free to discuss bands, songs, albums, sub-genres and philosophies - as long as it's METAL!

I'll start: I never make it a secret that I'm a huge prog metal fan and melodic prog often tickles my likey-likey bone. Some of my all-time favourites include Circus Maximus, Anubis Gate, Suspyre, Darkwater, Affector and, to a lesser extent, early Dream Theater.

My recent favourite band is Teramaze, their 2014 album "Esoteric Symbolism" is just gobsmackingly good. They have a perfect mix of prog, melodic and thrash metal.

TL;DR: \m/ TERAMAZE \m/

When I started listening to metal we had metal.
Death Metal came a short while after that but White Zombie, Sepultura etc still have a place in my playlist :)

oh fo sho... even things like Black Sabbath which was considered satanic back it's time is now like a mild form of rock (not even metal). Doesn't mean it's not bad music, and PS, I still love hearing it!

What do you mean "you had metal"? There are many good metal bands out there today. I personally enjoy the progression bands are making in redefining the genres of metal we know and love. The prog metal scene is especially vibrant and bursting with new potential these days. I'm always amazed to find new artists and bands that aren't afraid to demonstrate their technical ability (so-called "wankery") for the sake of scaring off mainstream listeners.

Just don't give my anything 'core. I hate 'core.

What makes metal "metal" is the style in which the music is written. I don't think metal can be graded as rock, or visa versa. Metal is primarily influenced by classical writing styles, whilst rocks stems from blues. You'll often hear prog metal bands incorporating elements of jazz into their writing, which I absolutely love!

That's exactly where my tastes become complicated.. I've always been drawn to the blues line of progression, blues -> rock -> hard rock -> metal, but then the "harder" genres of metal, like death metal, is simply too much for me. I don't listen to much classical music for the same reason, coincidentally.

But coming at prog from the more classic, mainstream rock side with The Mars Volta and Coheed and Cambria is opening the door to the types of prog sounds like you describe. I just like it all, dammit.

Sorry, that may have come out wrong.

I mean back them there were no genres of metal, it was all just metal :)

Not meant as an insult :p

I'm quite the opposite. My tastes revolved around the extreme side of metal for many years - black, death and doom. Over the years I became bored with extreme metal, as most bands started sounding the same. The riffs where the same, drummers just hammered out blastbeats in each song and the nondescript growling and shrieking made that no song truly stood out from another. So I gradually went over to more melodic styles of metal and settled on prog being my sub-genre of choice.

Sorry, that may have come out wrong.

No insult taken. I'm just very passionate about my metal. I always urge people to be open minded when it comes to metal, as I believe it is one of the few genres of music where you get musicians that are incredibly skilled at what they do. You often get multi-instrumentalist virtuosos that often release solo albums, writing all the songs and recording all instruments and vocals on their own. I appreciate the skill and effort they put into producing the music.

I will def check out the prog metal spammage when I get a gap.

My fav sub-genre's is metalcore and djent despite all the flak both stylws get for some reason.
The first metal I heard was Living Sacrifice's Reborn album back in 1997 and I read an interview where they said they are probably metalcore if they had to be classified. Ever since then I never shyed away from metalcore but there are so many poser shits in the genre
these days.
Checkout Phinehas for some quality metalcore!

Then for djent I like Pomegranate Tiger, After the Burial and the mighty............PERIPHERY!!! Good gosh man, Periphery are so fackin good its frightening, actually frightening. They are kind of morphing out of the djent sound so tehy are getting harder to pigeon hole which is actually awesome.
