SA’s broadband speeds: big improvements, but still rubbish

Faster Broad Band speeds are welcome, I however will gladly settle for a bit lower speed, but a good steady quality connection - minimal fluctuation in ping, latency and speed variations.

Unlike the current situation of, if an extra user or two logs on, the Internet falls over the edge ...

I have to say I've been pretty happy with my connection for the last couple years. I have 4mb line, and for once I haven't had issues with Telkom for years.

It must be the area, because my connection has been as solid as a rock since I moved to Somerset West. I had a 4mb, but apparently the exchanges are all upgraded, and 10mb is available, and I grabbed that opportunity the moment it presented itself. Just check with Telkom, because I'm pretty sure you'll be able to get 10 as well.

Well, they are supposed to be able to support 40mbps VDSL in my area, and I am 280 meters from the DSLAM/MSAN. If they cannot deliver a satifactory experience on a 2 mbps line, I see no point in making it faster ...

I read somewhere that the global definition of Broadband is 80mbps (or 100). We are not even close to that :S

You can't use one or two instances to say "oh but we do have 100mbps". Telkom still can't get 10mbps line to run everywhere, much less 4mbps :(

We have made some progress but compared to others, not nearly enough :(

FCC definition of broadband is now 25Mbps or faster.

Hmmm I must find that article again... but even at 25mbps we are still seriously lacking :(

I get that it is expensive to upgrade the exchanges but surely they should be planning this better.
Based on the amount of people paying just for a line (R154 a month) they are making a fair bit of money already.
Sure there is a lot of maintenance etc to be done, but even that should already be taken into account.

Come one SA, time to shape things up a bit!

The problem is that not all of the lines are Fibre, so the old cables cant handle the speeds as they are not maintained. So until we get Fibre Optics through the whole infrastructure it will never be stable and 100% consistent imo

My issue with that is that they have done a LOT of work to get fibre lines in place to connect exchanges to each other. But the work stopped there. No further roll out is happening atm to get the fibre out further.

My most dreaded words ever are : Sorry that exchange is full.

Just take me out back and shoot me please if I ever have to hear it again.

Telkom, it is time to shape up, or ship out ....

The other operators aren't much better I'm afraid... Ever dealt with Neotel for business ? I would rather pull my own teeth, thank you very much...

Talking of fiber, I am 280 meters from a fiber connected MSAN, but for all practical purposes, it is way out beyond the moon.

@Java - that is my whole argument. The connectivity is there, but isn't currently planned to be used for anything other than connection between exchanges.

The FTTH trials are working very well but to be blunt, package deals on data is a joke still :( I, like everyone else, would like fibre (even if it is only 20mbps) but with decent pricing and 200gb of data. I doubt we will see this any time soon though :(

20mbps would be nice, but I could live with 10mbps, if it had rock solid, dependable international connectivity. That is, gaming always works, streaming never buffers, etc.

That is exactly it!!!

I gave up my ADSL line for 4 years, went 3G/LTE, what a pleasure, then the kids grew up, started playing games online, watching Youtube videos, etc.

Became too expensive to continue - applied for an ADSL line - no ports/line available for 2 years. When my continued application was eventually successful. I was given the exact same number I had when I last had a line 6 years previously.
