SEGA has teased that the next Sonic game will be Sonic Runners.

Though details are few, we know the game will be released as a free-to-play title supported by in-game premium items. The official website lists it as coming to iOS devices running iOS7.0 plus, and for Android users on OS2.3 or later.

As for when Sonic Runners will be released? The site says 2015 for Japan.

The news comes following recent plans for SEGA to downsize the company. Last week, SEGA said around 300 employees in Japan were being offered voluntary retirement as part of the company’s restructuring effort. In the US, SEGA of America laid out plans to move the company from its San Francisco base to Southern California.

As for SEGA of Europe? We’re still waiting to see how the changes will affect it, but SEGA of Europe told IGN: “We are under consultation with a limited number of staff in the European publishing business and will be able to confirm decisions regarding any potential redundancies in the coming weeks.”

I really wish that Sega would take a page out of the Mario book and go back to the roots of Sonic and actually revive a game that was so awesome as a kid! Mario and Sonic were pretty much on par growing up, Sonic just came out later and had better graphics etc, but still Sonic was like an Icon!

The way things are going I wonder if they'll still be in gaming in 10 years.

Its pretty sad if you think back to the Sega MEGA DRIVE!!! That console was the business... They dropped the ball somewhere along the way...

Sonic isn't as fun as it used to be when we were kids.

Sega needs to rethink their strategy on gaming.

I think they're targeting the younger casual market now. There's tons of money there. Just create (or reuse) a cute character, plop it in a simple, brightly-coloured game, add in loads of DLC or in-app purchases and you're sure to have a winner.
